When you join California Surgical Specialists, you become part of a small, tightly-knit team that values collaboration, mutual support, and shared success. The practice culture is direct, professional, and focused on one goal: delivering excellent surgical care while building a sustainable, profitable practice together. Your partners are young, driven surgeons who have built this practice from the ground up and are looking for a colleague who shares their work ethic and ambition.
Ali Abidali, D.O., founded California Surgical Specialists and serves as the practice's driving force. Dr. Abidali completed general surgery residency and additional transplant surgery training. He is approximately three years out of training and speaks English and Arabic. In addition to his general surgery practice, he performs organ procurement work for OneLegacy as a separate endeavor. Dr. Abidali performs 15 to 25 operations per week, handles breast cancer and renal cancer surgeries, and maintains a high-volume clinic. He has been transparent about his expectations: he wants partners, not employees, and he is willing to mentor the right person toward full partnership and equal compensation.
Sana A. Qureshi, M.D., joined the practice approximately one year ago, merging her practice with Dr. Abidali's to form a 50/50 partnership. Dr. Qureshi is board certified in both General Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery, and she speaks English, Hindi, and Urdu. She handles a significant volume of colon cancer cases and performs approximately 75% of the operative volume that Dr. Abidali does. The partnership between Dr. Abidali and Dr. Qureshi demonstrates that the path to partnership is real and achievable for the right candidate.
Dr. Abidali has been clear about what he is looking for: someone who wants to build a long-term career and is willing to work hard to earn partnership. The practice is not seeking a surgeon who simply wants to clock in and out. They want a colleague who will help grow the business, contribute to decision-making, and eventually share equally in the rewards. The culture is entrepreneurial; both current partners are young, ambitious, and focused on building something that will thrive for decades.
At the same time, the partners understand the realities of surgical practice. They know that ramping up takes time, that building referral relationships requires patience, and that new surgeons need mentorship. Dr. Abidali has committed to proctoring new colleagues through unfamiliar procedures and teaching whatever skills need to be developed. The expectation is mutual investment: you invest in learning and growing the practice, and they invest in helping you succeed.
The practice employs one office manager who oversees operations at both clinic locations. Five Medical Assistants currently support the practice, rotating between the Upland and second clinic locations as needed. Each surgeon has a dedicated MA, and the practice will hire additional MAs as new surgeons join. The partners are also considering hiring an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) to support clinic operations and assist with larger surgeries.
Administrative functions including billing, collections, and insurance contracting are handled centrally, which allows surgeons to focus on patient care rather than paperwork. The overhead runs approximately 25%, which is considered efficient for a surgical practice.
You will join a lean, efficient team where everyone knows their role and works together to keep the practice running smoothly. The infrastructure is in place to support growth, and the partners are ready to add staff as the practice expands.
