The urology position at WellStar Spalding Hospital offers a unique opportunity to establish and grow a robust clinical practice with significant autonomy. As the primary urologist, you'll have the freedom to shape your practice according to your preferences and expertise. The hospital, a 160-bed Level IV Trauma Center, is fully equipped to support a comprehensive urology service line, including state-of-the-art DaVinci Xi robots and on-site lithotripsy, allowing for a wide range of procedures.
Your clinical responsibilities will be centered at Spalding Hospital, where you'll be the sole full-time urologist, effectively allowing you to dominate the local market. The hospital administration is committed to supporting your practice growth, with plans for a new office space to enhance patient care and accessibility. You'll have the flexibility to create your own schedule for both clinic and operating room time. The OR suite comprises six rooms, with open times available initially and the opportunity for dedicated block times as your volume increases.
The call schedule is structured to be manageable, with a maximum of 7 nights and 1 weekend per month. Call duties are relatively light, with an average of 0-1 calls per shift, though up to 3 is possible. Two Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) will be integral to your practice, assisting with office coverage and participating in the call rotation. The APPs will handle first call for non-critical issues, while you'll be available for more complex cases. The hospital's hospitalist group will manage admissions and discharges via phone consultation with you, allowing for in-person follow-up the next day if necessary.
Your practice will benefit from a strong referral network, with over 20 internal medicine primary care providers in the area ready to send patients your way. WellStar's marketing team will actively promote your services and facilitate introductions to referring physicians and relevant service lines. The catchment area encompasses Spalding, Henry, McDonough, and Hampton Counties, providing a substantial patient base for your practice.
The clinical environment is well-supported, with 24/7 anesthesia coverage provided by MDs, not CRNAs. You'll have access to comprehensive on-site imaging and laboratory services, including MRI and CT scans. The hospital uses the Epic EMR system, ensuring efficient and integrated patient record management. Additionally, if you're interested in academics, there are opportunities to work with rotating residents at Spalding Hospital.
In terms of procedures, you'll have the capability to perform a wide range of urological surgeries and treatments, from complex robotic procedures using the DaVinci Xi system to more routine operations. The on-site lithotripsy equipment allows for comprehensive stone management. Your clinic, which will be attached to the hospital campus, will be equipped with a urology cart and cystoscopy rooms for outpatient procedures.
This position offers the rare chance to build a urology practice from the ground up, with the backing of an established health system. You'll have the opportunity to shape the urological services for a significant patient population, with the potential to quickly become the go-to urologist in the area. The combination of modern equipment, strong institutional support, and a clear need in the community creates an ideal environment for a urologist looking to make a significant impact and build a thriving practice.
