Orthopedic Surgeon – Cody Regional Health – Cody, Wyoming

Your clinical practice focuses on broad general orthopedics across a large rural region. Patients rely on Cody Regional Health for fractures, joint disease, and musculoskeletal injuries that cannot be managed locally in the surrounding towns. You see a wide range of conditions in clinic, from chronic knee and shoulder degeneration to acute injuries from work, ranching, and recreation. The community does not generate enough volume for narrow subspecialties, so the work stays rooted in common orthopedic problems that make a significant difference in daily patient function.

The surgical side of the practice offers steady, meaningful volume without the pressure seen in large metropolitan centers. Trauma is moderate in complexity (any major trauma is shipped to Billings). Most cases involve fractures, tendon injuries, dislocations, and routine arthroscopy. Elective work remains consistent, especially in the fall and winter when patients schedule joint procedures before the year ends. Advanced pelvic trauma, spine, pediatric orthopedics, and oncologic cases are uncommon and typically referred out, allowing you to focus on a practice aligned with regional needs.

Annual case totals for the group have ranged from roughly 260 to 465 cases in recent years. The volume supports a busy but manageable OR schedule that gives you regular operating time without unpredictable surges.

Call responsibilities blend into the clinical routine. You cover eight to ten days per month, including one or two weekends. The emergency department evaluates and stabilizes most cases well, and transfers higher-acuity trauma when appropriate. Call often involves fracture assessments and determining whether a patient should stay in Cody or be sent to Billings. The structure keeps call meaningful but controlled.

Your clinic days follow a consistent rhythm. Most sessions include 16 to 18 patient visits, a manageable pace that allows for thoughtful evaluations and follow-up discussions. Because many patients travel considerable distances, they tend to arrive prepared, engaged, and appreciative of the access you provide.

  • Typical daily clinic volume sits between 16 and 18 patients
  • Visits include acute injuries, chronic joint complaints, postoperative follow-ups, and referrals from outreach sites
  • Patients often have strong follow-through due to limited access in their home communities

Outreach is an essential part of the practice and a key driver of growth. Every other week, you visit surrounding towns to evaluate patients closer to where they live. These visits build visibility in the region, strengthen referral relationships, and help redirect patients who might otherwise go to Billings.

  • Outreach locations include Powell, Thermopolis, Worland, Basin, and Lovell
  • Most encounters involve evaluations, conservative management, or postoperative checks
  • Larger or surgical cases return to Cody for definitive treatment

Epic supports your clinical workflow and communication with referring physicians. The system is stable, familiar, and helps move patients smoothly between clinic, outreach, and the operating room.

Working in this environment gives you a full-spectrum orthopedic practice with predictable demand, a manageable surgical load, and strong community loyalty. The clinical work remains varied and engaging, and you become an essential point of access for patients spread across northwest Wyoming.
