We are recruiting an advanced endoscopist and a general gastroenterologist

The GIs practice at an outpatient endoscopy unit and side by side clinic with 7 total endoscopy suites. When the new hospital opens, the gastroenterology section will move to practice there with brand new technology and equipment. There are 6 general gastroenterologists and 9 Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants that support all of the outpatient management of IBS, IBD and liver disease as well as the inpatient GI consultation service. There are 3 APPs that cover clinic only and 5 hybrid APPs that cover clinic and round in the hospital. Some of the APPs are specialized, for example there is an APP that specializes in IBD. The endoscopy nurses do some tests: manometry, capsules, etc. then has a GI read it.

Clinical Details of Advanced Endoscopy:

This unique position is 100% procedural, with no clinic requirements allowing you to have a true advanced gastroenterology practice. There are many procedures that are currently offered; however, you are not limited to just performing these procedures. Essentia will partner with you to ensure you have the necessary equipment, staff etc. to do the procedures you want. The procedures that are currently offered include:

  • ERCP 
  • SpyGlass Cholangioscopy
  • EUS (diagnostic and therapeutic) 
  • RFA
  • Cryotherapy
  • EMR 
  • Enteral Stenting  

In this practice, you will have access to the latest models of technology including:

  • Olympus endoscopes
  • EUS processors
  • Omega fixed table fluoroscopy units 
  • GI Genius – AI powered polyp detection system  

Call

Call for this position is only advanced call. When on call, it is a 24-hour call. This is second call; first call would go to your generalist GI partner that is on call with you. You would only need to come in at night for emergencies that cannot wait until the morning. Essentia has a well-trained Internal Medicine hospitalist service that manages all GI admissions and the gastroenterologists function as more of a consultative service. Hospitalists have gotten very good at being able to screen things out and are comfortable with GI bleeds, etc.

Clinical Details of General Gastroenterology: 

Our team of 6 General Gastroenterologists is looking to add another physician to their team. A typical week is 1-2 days in clinic, with the rest of the week spent in the endoscopy suite doing procedures. When you are in the hospital, you can have 2 APPs with you.

In this practice, you will have access to the latest models of technology including:  

  • Olympus endoscopes
  • Omega fixed table fluoroscopy units 
  • GI Genius – AI powered polyp detection system  

Call

Call will be 1:7. During weekday call, the GI on call would round in the hospital until 4:30pm then the overnight physician for that week would be on call from 4:30pm-7am. The physician on call during the day would be on for that whole week. Each night during the work week (M-F) there is a different physician on call. Weekend call is Friday- Monday. You would be in the endoscopy suite on Friday, cover anything that comes in on the weekend, be in the endoscopy suite again on Monday then you would have a comp day.

Teaching and Research Opportunities

Essentia is affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School. U of M is one of the largest medical schools in the country with two campuses based in the Twin Cities and Duluth, Minnesota. U of M has more than 140 residency and fellowship programs. There are opportunities for you to be involved with teaching family medicine and general surgery residents. There are also opportunities for research through UMD.
