Position Overview

Opportunity for Sickle Cell Disease Specialist in Leading Healthcare Program

The group seeks a faculty member with a focus and special interest in the treatment and research related to Sickle Cell Disease. Preference for a qualified candidate to join the department as an Associate Professor or Professor of Medicine based on candidate qualifications and approval by the College of Medicine Appointment Committee as well as the MUSC Board of Trustees.

We have a need for a physician to have a focus on adult sickle-cell patients and will collaborate with the pediatric team who is currently managing patients up to age 30. The new physician will build a program with adult patients to provide direct patient care as well as partnering with a team of exceptional providers at a nationally recognized NCI-designated university health system. There are no other sickle-cell programs in the state, and patients from across the state of South Carolina come here, so this is a major opportunity to build an incredible program. The state of South Carolina has granted some money to be directed exclusively to adult sickle-cell care, and it is not allocated for pediatrics.

The role will be split between administrative, clinical and research time. Opportunity to participate in teaching assignments and supervise/ mentor trainees at all levels. State support includes: state program manager, community liaison, behavioral health PhD, social workers and pharmacists. The program is also very involved in gene therapy. They have clinical trials in which they have patients to support this, and adult patients can be involved too.

We currently have no Sickle Cell providers, or a Medical Director. Patients are currently being seen by internists and they consult with pediatric HEM/ONC for patient needs. The Pediatrics department has 600 sickle-cell patients they are managing currently (165 patients are age 18+ = 1100 clinic visits in the last 18 months). The incoming provider will absorb those patients and clinic visits right away and their patient panel will ramp up extremely quickly.
