Position Overview

Understanding the Role

Northeast Counseling Services (NCS) is offering an exciting outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry opportunity. This role is ideal for medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders in children and adolescents, typically up to the age of 18. The primary responsibilities of the position include conducting comprehensive assessments to identify mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders, eating disorders, and other behavioral or emotional problems in children and teenagers.

Based on their evaluations, the psychiatrist will develop appropriate treatment plans, which may involve psychotherapy, medication management, or a combination of both. They will work closely with the patient, their family, and other healthcare professionals to create individualized treatment approaches. In addition to developing treatment plans, the psychiatrist will prescribe and monitor the use of psychiatric medications, such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, stimulants for ADHD, or other psychotropic drugs, as needed to address specific mental health conditions in children and adolescents.

The role also involves providing various forms of psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, or play therapy, to help children and adolescents cope with their emotional and behavioral challenges. Collaboration and coordination with other professionals, including pediatricians, psychologists, social workers, and school personnel, are essential to ensure comprehensive care and support for patients and their families.

The practice setting is an outpatient community mental health center with no inpatient or call responsibilities. The required qualifications include completion of both a psychiatry residency and a child and adolescent fellowship, with board certification preferred but not required. The expected work schedule is four days per week, seeing approximately 10 to 15 patients each day. This position is a replacement role, as the current child psychiatrist is nearing retirement and has begun to reduce his working hours. The psychiatrist will report clinically to the Medical Director and administratively to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Malory Kulick.
