Clinical Component

This is a 100% outpatient position. If you are applying for the Medical Director role, you would be 70% clinical and 30% protected administrative time.

Typical Work Week

St. Mary’s Medical Center splits their Pulmonology and ICU services to achieve a better work-life balance for each respective group. I spoke with Dr. Hussieno directly to get perspective on a typical work week.

Your practice would consist of 100% Outpatient Pulmonology, and the ability to do Sleep Medicine is preferred. You can do a 4-day or 5-day work week.

In clinic, new patients are scheduled in either 40- or 60-minute increments and follow up patients are 20–30-minute appointments. You will average 13-16 patients per day, with the option to see more. They have 10 exam rooms in their 10,000 square foot Center across 4 providers. And most of them work 4 day work weeks with different days off so there can be more rooms available.

I also spoke with Sherry their practice manager to get more insight on the clinic workflow. They have a dedicated scheduler and office staff in place. You’d also have your own MA and they have the system down to get one patient ready for you in one exam room, while you see another patient in another exam room. “It is turn-key.”

90% of your time will be spent at the Lung & Sleep Center. You will not be required to see pulmonary consults at the hospital, that is handled by the Intensivists.

Dr. Hussieno has dedicated time to do bronchoscopies on Tuesday mornings and EBUS on Thursday afternoons.

The Sleep Labs are located at the hospital, 0.5 miles from the Lung and Sleep Center. Dr. Hussieno’s practice is about 70% pulmonology and 30% sleep. He welcomes the incoming physician to practice sleep medicine as well. There are no other providers doing Sleep medicine in the entire valley. Dr. Hussieno also stated that there is no out reach required for Pulmonology or Sleep. “We have plenty of business here in town, that comes to us.”

Call is clinic call only (phone call only). You will split call with Dr. Hussieno and the 2 NP’s. Dr. Hussieno explained, “call is almost non-existent. I will maybe get 2-3 calls for the entire week.”
