Position Overview

Understanding the Role

Comprehensive Women's Health Care in Colorado's San Luis Valley

Step into a practice where you'll provide essential healthcare services to a community that genuinely needs and values your expertise. As the only OBGYN group serving a six-county region encompassing 50,000 people across 120 miles in any direction, you'll fill a critical healthcare gap while enjoying the support of an established team and the backing of a financially stable, independent healthcare system. Unlike urban practices where you compete for market share or academic settings where productivity pressures can compromise patient relationships, this role offers the perfect balance of meaningful clinical volume with the time and autonomy to practice medicine the way you envision.

Your practice will serve the entire San Luis Valley region, where patients travel up to 100 miles to receive women's health services that simply aren't available elsewhere. This service area includes El Dorado County and extends across the high mountain desert valley between the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountain ranges. With approximately 400 deliveries annually and a robust gynecologic surgery schedule, you'll maintain broad clinical skills while building lasting relationships with patients who see you not just as their doctor, but as an integral part of their community.

  • Full-scope OBGYN practice with 60% gynecology and 40% obstetrics (36+ weeks/Level 1 Nursery), allowing you to maintain diverse clinical skills across the specialty
  • Manageable patient volume of 15-22 patients daily with appropriate scheduling that balances productivity with quality patient care
  • Four-day clinical schedule with dedicated administrative time, all based at the state-of-the-art Women's Health Center
  • Board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology required, with support for ongoing CME and professional development
  • Established referral relationships within the community and region

The position offers the unique opportunity to practice full-spectrum women's health care, from routine preventive services and contraceptive counseling to complex gynecologic surgery and high-risk obstetrics. You'll work alongside experienced nurse midwives who handle routine prenatal care and normal deliveries, allowing you to focus on cases that truly require physician-level expertise while still maintaining involvement in the full continuum of women's healthcare.

San Luis Valley Health's commitment to women's services runs deep – as CEO Connie Martin emphasized, this is not just about healthcare delivery but about maintaining the economic and social fabric of the entire region. When families can't have babies locally, they leave the community, taking with them the workforce and economic vitality that sustains rural Colorado. Your role extends beyond individual patient care to preserving healthcare access for an entire region.

This is a replacement position created by recent provider departures, representing an opportunity to join a financially stable organization that has weathered rural healthcare challenges better than most of its peers. The position offers both the professional satisfaction of practicing at the top of your scope and the personal fulfillment of being genuinely needed by the community you serve.

For physicians seeking a practice where every patient matters, where your clinical decisions shape an entire region's healthcare access, and where you can build the kind of lasting doctor-patient relationships that drew you to medicine in the first place, this role represents everything that makes rural healthcare both challenging and deeply rewarding.
