The Medical Director position is going to be 80% clinical and 20% administrative. This will equate to a minimum of eight clinical shifts per month. And if they want to do more, they can do more. The administrative component is going to be mostly overseeing the team and being a link between the providers and administration. Administration is great to work with and very supportive.
The Medical director needs to have ownership of the place and the ability to communicate and build relationships with local physicians. Most of the community physicians don't admit patients to the hospital anymore, we have a hospitalist team that does that. There are a couple of family practitioners who still work on staff and they are easy to work with.
This candidate needs to be able to manage difficult situations in the group and in the community. These days we have to make very difficult decisions and these decisions have to be made on the fly. He or she will need to attend the National & Regional meetings with the ability to present and communicate as a representative of TeamHealth.
