Hematology/Oncology Position Overview

In this role, as a member of the medical team specializing in benign hematology conditions, you will be collaborating closely with a hematologist to manage cases related to DVT, PE, abnormalities in CBC, and bone marrow failures. Also, you will work alongside an oncologist to manage both highly curable cancers with surveillance and improve quality of life for patients with incurable cancers.

It is important to note that due to the advancements in treatment options, many cancers have now become chronic medical conditions, necessitating ongoing care and monitoring. Most patients on chemotherapy can be managed on an outpatient basis, with less than 5% requiring hospitalization. As part of your responsibilities, you will be involved in outpatient management, with APPs (Advanced Practice Providers) rotating between inpatient and outpatient care, spending approximately 25% of their time on inpatient hematology and oncology consults and 75% on outpatient care.

On the inpatient side, you can expect an average of 1 to 5 hospital consults per day, while the outpatient setting typically sees around 3 to 4 new patients daily, with 15 to 20 return visits. For new patient visits, you will have approximately 30 minutes per appointment, and 15 minutes for return visits.

Regarding call duties, the team operates on a rotation, with call being required every 3rd weekend. The APP(s) will take the 1st call during these weekends.

In terms of medical documentation, you will be utilizing the Cerner EMR system, with the added convenience of Dragon Dictation for efficient and accurate recording of patient information.

Facility-wise, there are 17 infusion chairs available to provide necessary treatments, and the hospital houses a permanent PET scanner, streamlining diagnostic procedures and ensuring comprehensive patient care.
