Navigating the Clinical Component

UCI holds a NIH Clinical Translational Science Award in which Trial Innovation Network activities are embedded as part of the UC Irvine Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS), and the Department of Neurology is a member of the NINDS-funded Network for Excellence in Neuroscience Clinical Trials (NeuroNEXT). As physician researchers, we have a high degree of commitment to clinical research on memory disorders and to matching interested patients to research opportunities both at UCI Health and throughout the region.

Criteria for the Professor of Clinical "X" Series: The incumbent will be expected to conduct substantial research; provide patient care; teach fellows, residents, and medical students; and perform public and University service. Excellent teaching is an essential criteria for appointment in this series.

Criteria for the Health Sciences Clinical Professor Series: The incumbent will be expected to teach fellows, residents, and medical students; provide patient care; contribute to scholarly activities; and provide public and University service.

Under the leadership of new chair, Claire Henchcliffe MD DPhil, we provide a diverse and inclusive environment that fosters intellectual discovery, creates and transmits innovative knowledge, improves human health, and provides medical leadership. Ranked among the top neurology departments in the country by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the UC Irvine Health School of Medicine's Department of Neurology is committed to supporting the School of Medicine Mission to “Discover, Teach, and Heal”. The department houses 41 full-time faculty members, including national leaders in the care of patients suffering from memory disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative dementias, Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, as well as stroke, epilepsy, seizures, neuro-oncology, and multiple sclerosis.

We benefit from cross-cutting collaborations with UCI MIND and the ADRC, and the patient experience is enhanced by our working closely with colleagues across a number of departments, such as the Family Medicine Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology and the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute. The Joe C. Wen & Family Center for Advanced Care is the outpatient facility at the new UCI Health — Irvine medical complex. As part of Orange County’s only academic medical center, our neurologists also actively pursue leading-edge research to minimize or eradicate the effects of diseases to advance the
