Pediatric Surgery

There is no existing pediatric neurology team at WK. The incoming physician will be the first in the role. The section below introduces the key clinical partners who will collaborate most closely with the pediatric neurologist from day one. Most of this team is located at or immediately adjacent to WK South, where the new program will be based.

Minh Q. Tran, MD Pediatric Critical Care Medicine PICU Director, WK South; trained at UCSF; has been at WK for 10 years; primary internal advocate for the pediatric neurology program; published in international peer-reviewed journals

Dr. Tran manages the 10-bed PICU (average census ~8) and has committed to protecting the incoming subspecialist from being overextended. He absorbs acute and emergent pediatric neurology presentations and will serve as the incoming physician's closest operational partner.

Pediatric Surgery

All three surgeons practice at Pediatric Surgical Associates, 2508 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, Suite 310, directly adjacent to the WK South PICU. All are board-certified in Pediatric Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Brown, MD Fellowship: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; General Surgery Residency: LSUHSC-Shreveport; Clinical Associate Professor, LSU School of Medicine Missouri native; trained at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; spent six years operating at Texas Children's Hospital before returning to Shreveport
Donald L. Sorrells Jr., MD Fellowship: Hasbro Children's Hospital (Brown University); Residency: LSUHSC-Shreveport; U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, Operation Desert Freedom veteran Red River Parish native; returned to Shreveport in 2005 after fellowship and military service
Kevin N. Boykin, MD Dual fellowship: Johns Hopkins Hospital (transplantation and pediatric surgery); Residency: LSUHSC-Shreveport; Former Chief of Surgery, LSU Children's Hospital Shreveport native; Johns Hopkins-trained; joined Brown and Sorrells in private practice after leading LSU Children's surgical department

Additional Pediatric Subspecialty Support

  • Pediatric Endocrinology: Dr. Pranaconda; built a solo subspecialty practice at WK from scratch and now sees approximately 16 patients per day; a direct model for what the pediatric neurology program can become
  • Neonatology: Level III NICU at WK South, 50 beds (average census ~30); handles patients from 22 weeks gestation; accepts transports from facilities with gestational age 34 weeks and above
  • Adult Neurology: WK Pierremont Neurology Clinic, including a neuropsychologist who performs deep brain stimulation evaluations and a movement disorders NP with DBS programming experience; available as a consulting and collegial resource
