YKHC offers a unique opportunity for physicians to deliver Outpatient Family Medicine services to the underserved Native Alaskan community in the Yukon-Delta. This role encompasses full spectrum care for patients across all age brackets, encompassing management of chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. It also entails prenatal care, contraceptive services—including the insertion and removal of Nexplanon and IUDs—and hands-on procedures such as suturing and casting. A distinctive aspect of this role involves traveling to Native Alaskan villages for 2-5 days, 1-2 times per quarter, ensuring healthcare access in village clinics.
The Native Alaskan, Yup’ik, community is known for their warm hospitality, and healthcare providers often find their engagement immensely fulfilling. The working schedule is set from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This allows physicians to maintain a work-life balance with no weekend duties, no on-call responsibilities, and an average of 16-18 patient consultations daily.
It's worth noting that the electronic medical record system in use is a specialized adaptation of Cerner. While some physicians might find this challenging, there is dedicated support available. An EMR trainer, with medical expertise, is on-hand to assist and guide anyone requiring orientation or ongoing support.
Prospective candidates don’t necessarily need an Alaskan medical license to be eligible. However, they should either be board-certified or board-eligible in family medicine and must possess an active, unblemished license from another state.
