Clinical Component

Navigating the Clinical Component

The urology practice at Baylor Scott & White Health in Waxahachie serves a broad patient population across Ellis County and surrounding communities. The clinical environment is fast-paced and high-volume, with consistent demand across general urology and a clear opening to build a robotic surgical program. Physicians joining the practice will have immediate access to a full patient panel and a referral network that is already generating more volume than the current team can absorb.

Patient Population

The practice serves a diverse and growing patient base driven by rapid population growth in Ellis County. The majority of cases fall within general urology, though unmet demand exists across several subspecialty areas that a new physician could incorporate based on interest and training.

Case Mix

Core General Urology (Current High Volume)

  • Kidney stones
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Elevated PSA workup and management
  • General urologic conditions

Underserved Cases Available to a New Physician

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Peyronie's disease
  • Low testosterone
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections

These cases are currently going unscheduled due to capacity limitations. A new physician could begin seeing them immediately and build volume quickly.

Robotic Surgery Opportunity

Robotic oncology cases are currently being referred out to urologists in Fort Worth. Dr. Modi is trained in robotics but does not perform robotic procedures due to the demands of his existing clinic volume. Hospital leadership has identified this as a priority area and is actively seeking a physician who can bring these cases back to the system.

A physician with robotic surgical experience would have the institutional backing and patient volume to build a meaningful robotic program from the start.

Surgical Schedule

Day Surgical Access
Monday Afternoons OR block time at the hospital
Thursday Procedures at physician-owned surgery center
Friday Afternoons Additional OR time at the hospital

Unused OR blocks are typically converted to clinic sessions to accommodate the high volume of waiting patients. The hospital is currently expanding OR capacity as part of a broader facility growth plan.

Call Expectations

  • 5 days of call per month per physician
  • 24-hour coverage on assigned days
  • Physicians select preferred call days
  • ER physicians handle many basic urologic procedures independently, including difficult catheter placements and suprapubic tubes
  • Overnight hospital calls are rare; Dr. Modi estimates being called in overnight approximately once every 4 to 6 months
  • Current call is shared between Dr. Modi and one outside urologist; a third physician would bring call to approximately 5 days per month per provider

Clinical Support

  • Dr. Modi's medical assistants have been with him for nearly a decade, reflecting strong team stability
  • The hospital is a Level IV trauma center currently working toward Level III designation
  • ER physicians are trained to manage lower-acuity urologic emergencies independently, reducing unnecessary after-hours call burden

Growth and Facility Expansion

The hospital is in an active expansion phase that will directly benefit the urology service line.

  • Additional operating rooms under construction
  • New hospital tower projected for 2027
  • Expanding Cancer Center with an additional LINAC
  • New medical office building
  • Expanded imaging capabilities
  • Continued service line development across the system

These investments will increase surgical capacity and allow the practice to retain more complex cases that currently leave the market.
