Position Overview

Understanding the Role

This position is going to be 100% GYN/ONC with ZERO OBGYN responsibilities. Practice and operate at our 413 Bed Level I trauma center UC Health Memorial Hospital Central. We have 12 ORs, 3 da Vinci XI robots onsite, participate in active clinical trials, and have an onsite infusion center. We currently have one current GYN/ONC provider, Dr. Dirk Pikaart, who has been in the community for over 20-years. We are looking to adding one new member to the team who wants to build a busy practice and eventually take over as the leader and face of Gynecologic Oncology for UC Health in Colorado Springs.

This is a turnkey practice, and you can expect to be busy from the beginning. The Hem/Onc Director of Operations, Michele Stephens, works hard to get all new patients scheduled within 14-days but some follow-ups are booked out more than 2-months, so there is a very definitive need.

Our GYN/ONC department will receive midlevel provider support in addition to full-spectrum ancillary support such as pelvic physical therapy, cancer nutrition, and counseling. We have a GYNONC Dedicated Nurse Navigator, GYN-specialized Radiation Oncologist, and GYN-specialized Pathologists in addition to a comprehensive team of Radiation Oncologists, Surgical Oncologists, Hematology/Oncologists & Hem/Onc Hospitalist, Urologists and more. There are 16+ OBGYNs, 24/7/365 OB Hospitalist & 11 Primary Care Clinics which will be sending referrals to ensure the new provider ramps up quickly. Ideally, we are looking for candidates who do their own Chemo, but this is not going to be a deal breaker for us.

Surgical (Operating Room) Component:
The operating rooms for UC Health are all staffed extremely well. You have a surgical tech; 1st assist and nursing team in the room with you for all procedures that need it. As most physicians have regular weekly block time, the OR Director tries to make sure physicians have the same support staff every week for continuity of care and familiarity between everyone to get better outcomes. The team is very open to obtaining new equipment or supplies if needed, and during the onboarding process they will work with each individual provider to discuss the specific needs.

The GYN/ONCs traditionally have reserved block time each Monday/Wednesday and 1st/3rd Fridays. So, each physician will have 1 scheduled day per week, and at least 1 additional day throughout the month. In addition to that, UC Health is opening a new ASC in September 2023 so they anticipate this will help to free-up availability and allow for more time doing cases. You can expect 8 – 10 procedures per week, depending on the complexity, but Dr. Pikaart has been consistently producing in the 90th% of the MGMA, so there is no shortage of procedures available.

The incoming provider will have no responsibility at UC Health Memorial North, but they would have the ability to get privileged there to do cases and get more block time. Overall, the team will do anything within its power to ensure everyone has enough time to do the cases needed.
