Bear Valley Community Healthcare District is adding a full-time primary care physician to its multi-specialty clinic in Big Bear Lake, California. The clinic serves a catchment area of approximately 20,000 people, with a mostly adult and geriatric population that relies on it as the main source of care on the mountain. This physician steps in as a stabilizing clinical presence for a busy, growing practice and as a resource for the mid-level team.
The role is built for a seasoned Family Medicine or Internal Medicine physician who wants to be part of the community, not a rotating or hybrid telehealth provider. Patients here want to see their doctor in person, and the clinic values consistency and continuity.

Big Bear Lake is a rural mountain community where the nearest larger hospitals are an hour to an hour and a half down the mountain. Access to care is the clinic's central mission, and demand has grown sharply. The district posted a record patient volume of about 22,600 visits this past year. The patient base skews heavily adult and geriatric, and many patients arrive with complex, long-deferred needs.
The incoming physician provides collaborative oversight for mid-level providers under the clinic's one-to-four supervising ratio. This is a resource and mentorship role, not direct line supervision: being available for questions, explaining findings, and performing chart reviews when needed.
Leadership is also building a longer-term path. The district wants a physician who can grow into an assistant medical director role and, in time, be positioned as a candidate for medical director. The current medical director, Steven Knapik, DO, remains in place, and this role is designed to work alongside him rather than replace him.
The physician works within the clinic team led by the clinic manager and reports up through the medical director and district administration. The CEO drives service-line growth and is closely involved in physician recruitment and vision.
This is a staff primary care position that backfills recent primary care turnover while adding physician-level depth to a mid-level-heavy team.
The interview process runs in three steps:
The initial contract term is two years.
