About the Team

The current medical team consists of one full-time gastroenterologist primarily focused on endoscopic procedures, one full-time hospitalist specializing in gastroenterology, and several per diem gastroenterologists who help cover the schedule, equivalent to about 2.25 FTE (Full-Time Equivalents).

The gastroenterology team is well-supported by a robust staff of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and nurses. Three full-time APPs manage most of the clinic work and follow-ups, while a full-time Physician Assistant (PA) is dedicated to supporting the inpatient gastroenterology service. The nursing support is equally comprehensive, featuring a dedicated endoscopy nursing team. Each provider is supported by an admitting nurse, two procedure nurses, and one tech, as well as a recovery nurse. Additionally, a dedicated RN in the office handles follow-ups and messaging, ensuring seamless patient care.

Specialized support staff play a crucial role in the department's efficiency. GI navigators are responsible for patient screening and review, while a built-in scope scheduling team manages the high volume of procedures. A dedicated surgery scheduler further streamlines the process. While not explicitly mentioned, it's implied that there is administrative staff to support the department's operations. Anesthesia support is also robust, with anesthesiologists available until 3:30 PM and extended coverage options. Two anesthesiologists stay until 5 PM, and two are on call, allowing the capability to run 2 rooms until 11 PM, then 1 room after 11 PM.

The team operates across multiple state-of-the-art facilities. A brand new 24,000 sq ft endoscopy center is set to open in December 2024, significantly expanding their capabilities. In Helena, there's a state-of-the-art GI lab in the new specialty building, along with 4-5 procedure rooms, some dedicated specifically to GI procedures. Great Falls features a dedicated inpatient procedure room, enhancing the team's ability to manage emergent cases efficiently.

Call coverage is shared among the team members, with the current schedule indicating a rotation of providers covering inpatient services and call. This arrangement helps maintain a balance between comprehensive patient care and provider work-life balance. The gastroenterology team at Benefis operates in a collaborative environment, working closely with other specialties as needed. The department's structure allows for flexibility in scheduling and role distribution, with options for providers to focus on outpatient procedures, inpatient care, or a mix of both.

The Benefis Gastroenterology department is poised for growth, with active recruitment efforts aimed at expanding the number of gastroenterologists. This expansion will help manage the high patient volume and reduce current wait times, which can extend to 6-9 months for appointments. Overall, the department is structured to provide comprehensive GI care, from routine procedures to complex inpatient cases, supported by a robust team of medical professionals and specialized staff. This setup not only ensures high-quality patient care but also offers an attractive and supportive environment for gastroenterologists looking for a dynamic and fulfilling practice setting.
