Vision for Program Development and Leadership

The ideal candidate will bring fresh perspectives and energy while respecting the program's established strengths and the dedicated providers who have built it. As the health system's leadership states, they are seeking "new blood and new energy" to reinvigorate the oncology service line.

Multi-Site Leadership with Strategic Growth Plans

As Medical Director, you'll oversee oncology services across three locations, each serving distinct community needs:

  • Main campus location at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville
  • Health Pavilion North – an outpatient facility approximately 15–20 minutes from the main campus
  • Lillington location (Central Harnett Hospital) – approximately 45–60 minutes from the main campus

The organization has ambitious plans for program growth, including potential satellite locations in surrounding communities to bring cancer care closer to patients. Your vision and leadership will help determine where and how those services are expanded.

Clinical Practice Integrated with Leadership

While providing strategic leadership for the oncology program, you'll maintain an active clinical practice that keeps you connected to patients and front-line care. The balance of administrative and clinical duties can be tailored to your preferences, with the expectation of at least three clinical days weekly.

Your clinical practice will include:

  • Comprehensive medical oncology and hematology services
  • Personal patient panel development based on your interests
  • Collaborative practice with a dedicated APP
  • Multidisciplinary approach with surgical and radiation oncology
  • Integration with a growing clinical trials program

This clinical engagement ensures your leadership decisions are grounded in real-world care while preserving the personal satisfaction of patient interaction.

Academic Opportunities with Teaching and Research

Cape Fear Valley offers academic engagement opportunities that enhance your career and the program’s reputation:

  • Potential development of an oncology fellowship program
  • Teaching opportunities with residents and medical students
  • Expansion of clinical trial participation with a dedicated research team
  • Collaboration with academic centers for complex cases and research
  • Protected time for academic and quality improvement work

With a new medical school launching in 2026, future opportunities for teaching and program development will only grow. The system seeks a medical director with a passion for building academic and clinical excellence.
