Position Overview

Understanding the Role

Building Your Cardiology Practice in Coastal North Carolina

Step into a general cardiology position designed around physician success at CarolinaEast Health System in New Bern, North Carolina. This role offers you the flexibility to shape your practice according to your career stage and preferences, whether you prefer a hybrid model combining clinic and hospital work or a purely outpatient focus. Unlike rigid academic structures or high-pressure productivity environments, CarolinaEast provides the infrastructure and collegial support that allows you to concentrate on delivering excellent cardiovascular care to a community that genuinely needs your expertise.

Your practice will serve a catchment area of 450,000+ people across eastern North Carolina, including Craven, Onslow, Pamlico, and Carteret counties. The cardiovascular program currently books new patient appointments out to April, meaning you will step into an established referral base with immediate patient volume from day one. CarolinaEast sits strategically between tertiary centers in Greenville and Wilmington, capturing patients who prefer receiving care closer to home rather than traveling to larger academic medical centers. The demand for cardiovascular services in this region far exceeds current capacity, creating sustainable practice growth without the need to build from scratch.

  • Board certification in Cardiology required with Internal Medicine foundation
  • Full-time position with customizable scheduling based on your preferred practice model
  • Reports to Dr. Alex Kirby, Medical Director and Interventional Cardiologist
  • Immediate patient volume with established referral patterns throughout the region
  • New position addressing critical community need; current general cardiology team has only two physicians

Two Distinct Practice Opportunities

CarolinaEast offers two practice settings that accommodate different career goals and lifestyle preferences. The New Bern position provides a hybrid model where you divide time between outpatient clinic and hospital-based work, including consultations, procedures, and inpatient rounding. This setting suits physicians who want to maintain the full breadth of general cardiology skills while working within a comprehensive cardiovascular program that includes interventional cardiology, structural heart, electrophysiology, and cardiac surgery.

The Morehead City position offers a fundamentally different opportunity: 100% outpatient practice with no call responsibilities and no hospital work. Located on the Crystal Coast about 45 minutes from New Bern, this clinic-only role serves patients in a beautiful coastal setting. This position works particularly well for mid-to-late career physicians ready to step back from procedures and hospital demands while maintaining an active, fulfilling clinical practice. Dr. Goul and Dr. Rave currently staff this location with support from three APPs, and the team needs one additional general cardiologist to meet patient demand.

New Bern Position:

  • Hybrid clinic and hospital practice model
  • 1:4 call rotation (administration actively working to transition night calls to hospitalists, limiting physician responsibility to weekend rounding only)
  • Access to two catheterization labs, two EP labs, and full cardiac surgery backup
  • Teaching opportunities with medical students through Campbell University affiliation
  • Device management, stress test supervision, echocardiography, and standard noninvasive procedures

Morehead City Position:

  • 100% outpatient with zero call responsibilities
  • No hospital privileges required
  • Ideal for physicians seeking work-life balance or transitioning toward retirement
  • Part-time arrangements potentially available for the right candidate
  • Device checks, stress test supervision, echocardiography, and outpatient consultations
  • Outstanding school systems and coastal lifestyle appeal

Both positions offer the same compensation structure and organizational support, with the understanding that Morehead City physicians receive a slightly adjusted payout rate reflecting the absence of call duties. Current Morehead City cardiologists report strong earnings in the $650,000 to $700,000 range despite the outpatient-only model, as outpatient cardiology reimbursement has proven robust.

The cardiovascular program represents a strategic priority for CarolinaEast leadership, with recent investments including a state-of-the-art EP lab and plans for cardiac CT services. Administration has demonstrated genuine commitment to physician satisfaction by actively pursuing solutions to call burden concerns and maintaining competitive compensation that recognizes the value cardiologists bring to the health system and community.
