We are looking to replace an outgoing provider as he prepares to move closer to his wife’s family in South Carolina and enjoy the retired life. Dr. Mullins started the program 7-years ago and has done an amazing job building everything as the only Oncology facility on the entire Kenai Peninsula (serving more than 50K patient lives). We see around 450-500 new patients each year and are able to treat the vast majority at our Cancer Center in Soldotna, AK. We obviously have some limitation, and send out acute leukemia, BMT, advanced Head & Neck type cases to either Providence in Anchorage or to Virginia Mason in Seattle.
The Oncology and Infusion Center at Central Peninsula Hospital offers quality outpatient cancer and infusion care close to home. The Cancer center is attached to the hospital and is on the 3rd floor of the medical office building. There are 10 Infusion chairs and two private rooms for patients with outstanding views of the mountains. The Nurse Practitioner and OCN Certified nurse’s manage the infusion center and treat all patients but will consult you when necessary. The Oncology clinic is down the hall, to provide easy access to patients. All Oncology based providers have private offices in a secluded area behind the clinic, also on the 3rd floor, which makes it very easy to walk over and discuss patients with Radiology, Radiation Oncology, General Surgery, Urology, etc.
A normal work week will consist of either a 4- or 5-day work week seeing 12-14 patients per day with an average of 2 new patients each day. There are no inpatient responsibilities at all, outpatient only, anyone that would need to be admitted would be done by the hospitalist team to manage and if the acuity is too high, they would be transferred to Anchorage or Seattle. Overall, the job is about 85% Oncology based patients and 15% Hematology patients, but this is not necessarily the expectation moving forward. Dr. Mullins is a Medical Oncologist, so he does not see much Hematology due to that. When I met with him, he did say there is ample Hematology patients he refers to Anchorage since he is not qualified to treat them.
