Navigating the Clinical Component

Delivering Exceptional Cardiovascular Care

As a General Cardiologist at Southern Indiana Heart & Vascular, you'll provide comprehensive non-invasive cardiology services to a diverse patient population across southeastern Indiana. Your days will offer the perfect blend of clinical variety and procedural consistency, allowing you to maintain and expand your skills across the full spectrum of non-invasive cardiology. Unlike many cardiology practices where physicians feel perpetually rushed, this position emphasizes thorough patient evaluation and personalized care plans over mere volume.

You'll divide your time between the state-of-the-art outpatient clinic and the adjacent hospital, where you'll care for inpatients on the dedicated cardiac step-down unit. This 20–30 bed cardiac unit (2 Tower) is conveniently positioned directly above the cath labs and close to the emergency department, facilitating rapid response for urgent cardiovascular cases. The hospital's exceptional door-to-balloon times – half the national average – reflect the efficiency of the entire cardiac team.

Patient Population and Services

Your practice will serve patients from across a 10-county region in southeastern Indiana, representing a diverse demographic mix and a wide range of cardiovascular conditions. From managing complex heart failure patients to providing preventive care for those at risk, your expertise will make a meaningful difference in this community.

  • Diverse patient mix spanning all adult age groups, socioeconomic backgrounds, and insurance coverages
  • Comprehensive diagnostic services including echocardiography, nuclear/PET stress imaging, TEEs, and cardiac CT
  • Focus on non-invasive cardiovascular care with seamless referral pathways to interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists within the practice
  • Outreach clinic opportunities in satellite locations (Greensburg, North Vernon, and Seymour), allowing you to serve rural communities one or two days per month
  • Inpatient census typically includes 12–15 cardiology patients on the cardiac step-down unit

Clinical Support and Technology

You'll practice in an environment designed to optimize your clinical effectiveness through excellent support staff and cutting-edge technology. The practice's infrastructure ensures that your time is focused on medical decision-making rather than administrative tasks.

  • State-of-the-art EPIC EMR system with full integration across inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Dedicated echo techs, EKG techs, and nuclear medicine specialists ensuring high-quality diagnostic studies
  • Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program located within the developing Cardiac Center of Excellence
  • Advanced cardiac imaging capabilities including nuclear/PET stress imaging and cardiac CT
  • Specialized heart failure program and pacemaker clinic providing continuity of care for complex patients
  • Triage team to assist with phone calls and urgent patient needs

Call Coverage and Schedule

Your call responsibilities reflect the practice's commitment to physician well-being, with a manageable 1:6 rotation that allows you to maintain personal commitments and family time. Unlike the exhausting schedules common in many hospital settings, this balanced approach means you'll typically take call just one weekend per month, with colleagues who genuinely respect boundaries during your off-time.

  • Weekend call from 8am Saturday to 8am Monday, approximately once every six weeks
  • Weeknight call from 5pm to 8am on a 1:6 rotation
  • Dedicated nurse practitioner support during weekend call to assist with rounds and patient discharges
  • Hospitalist admission support for overnight patients, minimizing middle-of-the-night calls
  • Collaborative call arrangement with general cardiologists and electrophysiologists sharing the rotation

The call burden is consistently described as "light" with rare middle-of-the-night hospital visits. When you're on call, you'll have the security of knowing that your colleagues and the hospital staff are committed to appropriate triaging of issues, minimizing unnecessary interruptions while ensuring optimal patient care.

The system's recognition as one of the nation's 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals isn't just an accolade – it's a reflection of the daily commitment to excellence you'll experience and contribute to in this role.
