Position Overview

Understanding the Role

A Critical Role in the Region’s Evolving ICU Program

You will join a program that has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. Until just three and a half years ago, this hospital did not have a 24/7 Critical Care Medicine presence. Recognizing the growing community need, the health system committed to building an ICU program with dedicated intensivist coverage every day of the week. Your role continues this important evolution, positioning you as a cornerstone of an expanding model of care that blends clinical autonomy with collaborative support. Our Internal Medicine Hospitalists typically round on 11–13 patients per day, with 2–3 admissions during their shift.

This is a 100% inpatient opportunity within a Level III Trauma Center, designed for physicians who want to dedicate their practice to the art and science of intensive care. The ICU is structured as an open model, where you will co-manage patients alongside hospitalists at night while directly leading care during your daytime shifts. For those who value balance and sustainability, the schedule is highly attractive: a consistent 7 on / 7 off rotation, covering daytime shifts from 7 AM to 7 PM, with optional night call opportunities available at additional pay.

Your patient panel will include a blend of high-acuity and step-down cases, allowing you to practice at the top of your training without being overwhelmed by volume. The census typically ranges from 5–7 patients per day, though this may rise during peak flu months. Unlike larger, chaotic ICUs where intensivists are stretched thin, here you’ll have the time, space, and team support to truly make an impact with every patient interaction.

The position welcomes physicians trained in Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, or Internal Medicine, though those with prior experience in ICU leadership or teaching are especially valued. As you step into this role, you’ll find not only a facility invested in your success but also a community grateful for your presence.
