Our general GIs treat GERD, IBD, Crohn’s and other general diseases. About 20% of the practice is liver patients. We frequently see Hep C, Hep B, Fatty Liver and Cirrhosis cases. Our practice manages liver transplant patients as well, up until the transplant. We work in partnership with UCSF and Stanford, two of the nation’s top programs. If you are interested in having a hepatology heavy practice, there would be flexibility to manage the majority of liver patients. IBD is also something that the group does not a ton of, but would not mind giving up to an incoming GI who might be interested in building an IBD focused practice. Again, there is flexibility and autonomy in how you practice/what you would like your practice to be focused on or subspecialized in.
The GI clinic is located 0.4 miles from the hospital in a building with beautiful, scenic lake views. The clinic has 30 exam rooms, so each GI can have several rooms for just their patients. We have two GI NPs who screen for colonoscopies and manage low acuity visits so our physicians can focus on the higher acuity. The NPs also do most of the pathology and imaging calls to patients. In addition to the Nurse Practitioners, each physician has a dedicated MA that does their H&Ps, authorizations, and most referrals. New patients are typically scheduled for 30 minutes and follow ups are scheduled for 15 minutes. There is a procedure room in clinic that the team utilizes for capsule endoscopy, manometry, fiber scans etc.
Most procedures will be done at the Surgery Center on the St. Joseph’s hospital campus. There are three endoscopy suites that are shared between our GI team. A general GI can expect to be doing an average of 35-45 procedures per week. There is the volume and staff to be as busy as you would like. The amount of procedures you do will be dependent on you, how busy you would like to be and how many days per week you want to be scoping versus in clinic. It is our goal to provide you with everything you need to have a successful practice and maintain autonomy in how you would like to practice. Our advanced GI, Dr. Malhi, does 300-350 ERCPs and EUS per year. He also does Barrett’s Esophagus, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection and more. If interested and within your skill set, Dr. Malhi would be open to sharing some ERCP cases.
