Clinical Component

Understanding the Clinical Component

  • Patient Population: The hospital handles up to 17 babies in the well-baby nursery. The Pediatric Hospitalist group primarily covers this unit, alongside the pediatric ward and emergency consults.
  • Call Schedule: Call Schedule: 12-hour shifts alternating between days and nights, typically covering 12-14 shifts per month. Physicians are on call when they are in the hospital, but once you're off, you're truly 'off.
  • Support & Coverage: A Neonatology group manages deliveries and neonatal procedures. Again, a second Pediatric Hospitalist provides additional help on high-volume days.
  • Procedures: Key procedures include lumbar punctures. Circumcisions and arterial sticks are handled by the Neonatology team.

Staff

The current group of Pediatric Hospitalists at St. Joseph's is composed of five physicians, including one from Nigeria and another from Sweden, contributing to a multicultural team. The oldest member is 40, while the youngest is 30. This diverse and collaborative group works well together, often swapping shifts to accommodate personal schedules.
