Position Overview

Understanding the Role

At ESRH, we see close to 75% of all primary care patients in the region with the balance going to the local hospital, Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, or up into southern Maryland or down to Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

ESRH takes care of a very diverse patient population. Our summers have a lot of tourists and walk-ins throughout the Eastern Shore. Since Covid there has been a great influx of people from New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia coming to the area to retire or work remotely. These patients have had to accept, and they do, that the speed of care delivery from where they are from is not the same on the Eastern Shore. We will get things taken care of; it just might take a little longer due to more limited resources in the immediate area.

Our ideal candidate is going to be flexible and able to roll with the punches, especially in the summertime tourist season. Patients come in every year having fallen off their paddle board and stepping on the oyster beds needing a dozen stitches.

Our Eastville Center opened in April 2020 with a $12M investment, but then had to close because of Covid. So, we saw our patients via telemedicine during that time. We continue to see some patients via telemedicine, but only if they are stable. Our providers and patients doing telemedicine are very comfortable with technology. Some of our patients live in areas with limited broadband coverage that would not qualify for a telemedicine appointment. We still like to recommend the patient come in to see their provider at least every other visit. The chronic patients need to see their provider in person.

Our largest minority population is Spanish speaking with the next largest being Creole. We use certified medical interpreters, but on occasion, when a patient elects to have a family member interpret, we will just document that into the patient’s record. We just want to be sure that the accuracy of the providers assessment is constant.

Located in a picturesque seaside community on the northern end of the peninsula. The Chincoteague Island Community Health Center, offers primary care and urgent care services to patients of all ages, from infants to seniors. Opportunity to pursue your subspecialty interests and you will be fully supported by leadership and your colleagues.

We offer family medicine, geriatrics, internal medicine, and pediatrics at our four centers plus urgent care at our new Express Care.
