Navigating the Clinical Component

Practice Structure & Clinical Focus

Your clinical practice will be a rich blend of hematology and oncology. Most physicians see a mix of approximately 50% hematology and 50% oncology, but the role is designed with flexibility to support personalized subspecialty interests in areas like GI, prostate, lung cancer, and benign hematology. Community demand for hematology is particularly high, presenting opportunities to shape your practice accordingly.

You’ll primarily work from the main cancer center campus, with one clinic day per week spent at a modern satellite site in either La Quinta or Palm Springs. These locations are just 20–30 minutes away and situated in highly desirable residential areas—ideal for work-life integration and growing a community-focused patient panel.

  • Patient volume: 65+ new patients per week across the team
  • Schedule autonomy: Control your own daily patient volume
  • Clinic distribution: 3.5 days at main campus, 1 day at satellite, 0.5 admin day
  • Call schedule: Favorable 1:8 rotation (projected to improve to 1:10)
  • Hospital coverage: Only one hospital with admissions managed by hospitalists
  • EMR system: Epic across all clinical settings

Exceptional Support & Infrastructure

  • Team-based care: 2 MAs per physician, growing to 3 with APPs
  • Dedicated RN: Assigned as patient panel matures
  • APP option: Advanced Practice Providers available for independent patient visits
  • In-house support: Social workers, nurse/financial navigators, support groups
  • Tumor board access: Participate in multidisciplinary panels (Breast, Lung, GI, Neuro, Prostate, Molecular)
  • Academic ties: UC San Diego affiliation and fellowship program in development

This is a setting where clinical excellence is actively supported. The infrastructure, leadership, and patient demand enable a sustainable, fulfilling practice tailored to your professional goals.

Engage in Groundbreaking Research & Clinical Trials

At Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research while delivering innovative care. The center is involved in early-phase and large-scale trials focused on biotherapies, immunotherapies, and precision imaging.

  • Biotherapies & Targeted Immunotherapies: Personalized treatments based on molecular profiling
  • Early Cancer Detection: Advanced imaging to identify early-stage, treatable cancers

Current Clinical Trials

  • Melanoma: Phase 3 trial comparing Fianlimab + Cemiplimab vs. Relatlimab + Nivolumab for unresectable/metastatic cases
  • Waldenström Macroglobulinemia: Phase 4 observational trial using Zanubrutinib (BTK inhibitor)
  • HER2-Positive Breast Cancer: CompassHER2 RD Phase III trial of T-DM1 vs. T-DM1 + Tucatinib

Physicians are encouraged to engage in research. Protected admin time is allocated for clinical trials and study participation, ensuring your contributions are supported and sustainable within the clinical workflow.
