Clinical Component

This is a 100% Vascular Surgery position with no General Surgery Call. If you are applying for the Medical Director role, you would be 70% clinical and 30% protected administrative time.

Typical Work Week

Dr. Walpole typically does 3 days of clinic and 2 full days in the OR. One of his clinic days he divides between his VS patients and their Wound Care clinic, where he gets several referrals.

  • He averages 20-30 patients/day in vascular surgery clinic
  • He averages 14-16 patients in wound care clinic
  • He’ll average 4-6 cases per OR day, depending on the complexity of the procedure. There is another long-term locums to assist if he needs. Dr. Walpole is also willing and able to scrub in on your cases, if needed. They take a team-based approach.
  • Call: Vascular surgery call only, no general surgery call.
  • 1:4, being supplemented with locums. The goal is to not rely on locums and maintain continuity of care with permanent VS staff.

New Advanced Care Options

St. Mary’s new Heart & Vascular Institute provides significantly expanded access to care options never before available in our region. Advanced minimally invasive procedures such as TAVR heart valve procedures have the potential to shorten patient discomfort and downtime, and offer an alternative when open surgery
might present challenges.

The new Radial Lounge provides an unprecedented level of patient comfort, and supports the radial (wrist) catheter entry vs. the femoral (groin) entry. In addition to improved comfort, same-day procedures can often be accommodated, and patient recovery time can frequently be reduced.

Since our founding in 1896, we have counted on our regional providers and partners to help guide the services at St. Mary’s. This level of collaboration has produced a tertiary care hospital “custom built” to best serve the needs of the people in our region. The new Heart & Vascular Institute was planned carefully, over many years, and with extensive input from the regional healthcare community. This is not just a new surgery center, this is a whole new level of care for Western Colorado and Eastern Utah.

  • 1 : “Hybrid” suite offering interventional radiology and full operating room capability in one
  • 1 : “Radial” patient lounge : Comfortable same-day procedural room featuring lounges, televisions, wi-fi and other “home-like” features that accommodate radial (wrist) catheter entry vs. the femoral (groin) entry and generally improve outcomes and reduce patient downtime.
  • 1 : Cardiac Rehab Gym -    1500 SF featuring the latest equipment and therapists to aid recovery
