Union General Hospital is the flagship of Union General Health System, a financially sound, not-for-profit organization serving the rural communities of North Georgia and neighboring areas in North Carolina. Based in Blairsville, Georgia, the hospital features 45 licensed beds within a 160,000-square-foot facility and delivers care with a balance of clinical excellence and genuine hospitality. The facility’s chef-prepared meals, private rooms, and warm, professional staff underscore a patient-first philosophy that’s been part of the hospital’s DNA for more than 60 years.
The health system includes 20–21 affiliated facilities, from hospitals and nursing homes to dialysis, wellness, and outpatient clinics across Georgia and North Carolina. Union General Health System operates under the Union County Hospital Authority and employs more than 1,200 people. It is anchored by two hospitals—Union General and Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee—with robust services spanning acute care, surgery, OB/GYN, orthopedics, cardiopulmonary rehab, and more.
Union General has seen consistent expansion, with major investments including a $30 million infrastructure upgrade in 2006 and a new 41,000-square-foot medical office building in 2023 dedicated to orthopedics, sports medicine, and women’s health. Despite a leadership-related legal challenge in 2016, the system remains respected and resilient, known for local outreach, education initiatives like “Walk with a Doc”, and its enduring mission of compassionate care.
Physician services are supported by a diverse team that includes 65 physicians across specialties such as family medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine, cardiology, and OB/GYN. The organization sees a high volume of Medicare procedures (278,022 annually), with Medicare allowed amounts exceeding $17 million. Union General Hospital handles over 70% of the health system’s physician affiliations.
