Position Overview

Understanding the Role

Essential Emergency OB Care in a Supportive Team Environment

As an OB Hospitalist at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, you'll step into a role that blends clinical excellence with genuine work-life balance. This position offers the opportunity to be part of a well-established OB Hospitalist program that provides critical obstetric care to a substantial regional population. Unlike traditional private practice where on-call demands can be relentless, or academic settings that may require extensive teaching and administrative responsibilities, this position allows you to focus on what you do best—providing exceptional obstetric care while enjoying a structured schedule that respects your personal time.

Your practice will be based in Union Hospital's dedicated OB Emergency Department, where you'll evaluate and manage pregnant patients of all gestational ages once pregnancy is confirmed. As the front-line physician for obstetric emergencies, you'll work within a modern, well-equipped facility alongside an experienced nursing team that takes pride in their clinical skills and patient care. With approximately 4,000 OB ED visits annually, you'll experience a steady flow of diverse cases that will maintain your clinical edge while the 24-hour shift structure provides genuine time away from clinical responsibilities.

  • Well-established OB Hospitalist program that was previously contracted through OB Hospitalist Group (OBHG) and transitioned to an employed model in October 2022
  • Primary responsibility for managing the OB Emergency Department with a dedicated facility including five private exam rooms and four additional bays
  • Management of unassigned patients throughout labor, delivery, and postpartum care (approximately 174 deliveries by OB hospitalists annually)
  • Collaboration with 7-8 employed OB/GYNs who typically manage their own deliveries but may request coverage
  • 24/7 support from on-site maternal-fetal medicine, dedicated OB anesthesia (CRNA-driven), and on-site neonatology services

Union Hospital serves as the regional hub for obstetric care, with a level three perinatal designation (the highest available outside Indianapolis) and a service area encompassing nine counties with a population of over 300,000. As the primary provider of obstetric care in the region, the hospital performs approximately 1,800 deliveries annually, with the OB ED processing 300-350 patient visits per month. This vital regional service ensures that you'll be making a meaningful difference in maternal care across a substantial area of Indiana.

The OB Hospitalist team works collaboratively with Union's employed OB/GYN group, as well as with family medicine residents who perform a small number of deliveries each month. You'll have the opportunity to serve as a mentor and clinical resource to these residents, enhancing your professional satisfaction while contributing to the education of the next generation of physicians.

This position represents an opportunity to join a thriving OB program with outstanding facilities and support services. The position is being added to ensure continued excellent obstetric emergency coverage while maintaining an optimal work-life balance for the entire physician team.
