Navigating the Clinical Component

The clinical component of the Gastroenterology division is dedicated to providing comprehensive, high-quality care across a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders. With a focus on patient-centered care, advanced procedures, and operational efficiency, the division serves as a critical resource for both routine and complex GI cases.

Patient Care and Services
The division manages a diverse patient population, offering both general gastroenterology services and advanced subspecialty care. Key services include:

  • Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures: A wide array of procedures is performed, including colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). The division also plans to expand into cutting-edge techniques, such as deep tissue endoscopic renewals.
  • Comprehensive Care Coordination: The team is committed to streamlining patient access, minimizing wait times, and ensuring that patients receive timely and effective care. With approximately 8,200 procedures and 16,000 outpatient visits annually, the division continues to enhance its operational capabilities to meet patient needs.

Focus on Complex Cases
The division functions as a referral center for tertiary care, addressing some of the most challenging GI cases in the region. Patients with complex conditions are supported by a multidisciplinary team that includes specialists in interventional radiology, surgical oncology, and hepatology. This collaborative environment ensures that even the most intricate cases receive comprehensive, coordinated care.

Academic and Teaching Integration
As part of an academic medical center, the division integrates clinical care with education. Faculty members work closely with medical students, residents, and fellows during patient care, ensuring hands-on learning and mentorship. The teaching mission of the division enriches the clinical environment, fostering innovation and knowledge sharing.

Quality and Efficiency Initiatives
The division prioritizes quality improvement and operational efficiency. Efforts include:

  • Tracking and Improving Key Metrics: The division has begun collecting adenoma detection rate (ADR) data and implementing other performance metrics to monitor and enhance care quality.
  • Streamlining Processes: Scheduling times for procedures have been standardized to optimize workflow, with designated timeframes for different procedures such as 15 minutes for straightforward diagnostic cases, 30 minutes for colonoscopies, and 45 minutes for combination procedures.
  • Leveraging Technology: The facility utilizes advanced equipment such as Omega imaging systems and C-arm technology to support precision in advanced endoscopy.

Innovations in Clinical Support
The clinical program is bolstered by a robust support infrastructure, including a dedicated recovery area for Phase 1 and Phase 2 care. The onsite laboratory and diagnostic services eliminate the need for patients to visit external facilities, creating a seamless care experience. Additionally, a flex area with additional rooms is activated during high-volume periods, enhancing the division’s capacity.

Commitment to Excellence
The division strives to lead in clinical excellence by maintaining close communication and collaboration among providers, nurses, and administrative staff. Regular meetings ensure alignment on goals and strategies to continuously improve patient care. This focus on teamwork fosters an environment where patients receive holistic, high-quality services.

Call
Call is taken from home as the fellows are in house on first call. The advanced call responsibilities are not busy according to the GI’s we visited with.

Future Goals
The division aims to further reduce waiting times, expand procedural capabilities, and strengthen its position as a center for advanced GI care. Plans include recruiting additional providers and support staff to address capacity challenges and continuing to build referral networks by delivering exceptional outcomes.

Current Staff
The team comprises three advanced GI physicians supported by physician assistants, schedulers, and administrative staff. The division is actively recruiting a nurse navigator to improve patient management and workflow. Collaborative practice and a team-oriented culture are highlighted, but staffing shortages, due to program growth, have been a challenge. Current staff are passionate about providing tertiary care and maintaining strong referral relationships.
