Clinical Details

Your clinical practice as Division Chief will be both dynamic and manageable, designed to leverage your subspecialty expertise while providing broad oversight across the laboratories. The division covers hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, blood banking and transfusion medicine, and therapeutic apheresis—disciplines critical to every patient’s care journey in this academic health system. You will guide a team of highly trained faculty and collaborate with experienced laboratory administrators and supervisors who ensure day-to-day operations run smoothly, freeing you to focus on clinical decision-making and strategic leadership.

The patient population you serve will be diverse, ranging from pediatric patients at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia to complex oncology cases at the Georgia Cancer Center and veterans at the VA Medical Center. This variety creates intellectually engaging work and ensures your expertise has an impact across a broad spectrum of patient care.

Call and Clinical Coverage

Your call responsibilities will be structured with physician well-being in mind. Coverage is shared equitably among Clinical Pathology faculty, with approximately one week of evening and overnight call every 6–8 weeks. Residents take first call, meaning you are rarely called in directly, and most issues can be handled by phone. On weekends, call is continuous from Friday evening to Monday morning, though in practice, being called in is infrequent.

Academic and Teaching Engagement

In this academic setting, you will actively shape the next generation of pathologists. Residents rotate through hematopathology, microbiology, transfusion medicine, chemistry, and molecular diagnostics, giving you numerous opportunities to co-scope cases, mentor trainees, and provide didactic teaching. Medical student instruction is lighter, given Augusta University’s condensed curriculum, but you will still contribute to select lectures and problem-based learning sessions.

Research and Innovation

While this role is primarily clinical, there is ample opportunity to engage in research aligned with your subspecialty. Augusta University emphasizes translational science, particularly in immunology, cancer, and neuroscience. You will have access to the Georgia Esoteric and Molecular (GEM) Lab for collaborative projects and may pursue grant funding if research is a personal interest.
