Position Overview

Understanding the Role

Clinical Pathology Division Chief at Wellstar MCG Health

As Clinical Pathology Division Chief at Wellstar MCG Health, you will step into a pivotal leadership role guiding one of the most essential arms of the Department of Pathology. This position was created following the retirement of a long-serving chief, giving you the opportunity to shape the next chapter for a division that already functions as a well-oiled system supporting a broad healthcare network. You will lead a team of dedicated faculty while working in partnership with outstanding administrative staff who handle day-to-day lab operations, allowing you to focus on clinical leadership, teaching, and strategic growth.

Your division plays a central role in diagnostic medicine across multiple facilities, including the 478-bed Wellstar MCG Health adult hospital, the 154-bed Children’s Hospital of Georgia, the Georgia Cancer Center, and the affiliated VA Medical Center. The service area reaches across the Augusta region and beyond, with the labs collectively processing over three million tests annually through the state-of-the-art Core Laboratory. As Chief, you will ensure that this high-volume system continues to operate with precision, quality, and innovation.

In addition to leading clinical operations, you will provide academic oversight by teaching residents and medical students, contributing to a program that has been ACGME-accredited since 1940. You will also have opportunities to advance research, particularly in molecular diagnostics, genomics, and translational collaborations, with the support of the Georgia Esoteric and Molecular (GEM) Lab.

Key Highlights of the Role

  • Lead the Clinical Pathology Division across hematology, chemistry, microbiology, transfusion medicine, and more
  • Provide oversight of multiple hospital laboratories serving adults, pediatrics, oncology, and veterans
  • Manageable balance of responsibilities: approximately 85% clinical and 15% academic/research/administrative
  • Direct involvement with pathology residents and fellows, shaping future leaders in the field
  • Collaborate with hospital and university leadership to ensure regulatory compliance and continuous quality improvement
  • Appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level, with the potential to hold the Walter Shepherd Endowed Chair

This is a rare chance to combine meaningful leadership with academic influence in a department known for excellence, collegiality, and stability. You will be empowered to align the division with the health system’s growth, introduce new testing capabilities, and continue a legacy of service that is vital to the community’s health.
