Your clinical practice will encompass the full spectrum of hematology and oncology care, with an approximately even split between hematologic malignancies and solid tumor oncology. You'll see a typical daily patient load of 20–25 patients, including 3–4 new consultations and 15–20 follow-up visits, providing the ideal balance of new case complexity and ongoing relationship building with patients throughout their cancer journey. The 30-minute new patient appointments and 15-minute follow-ups ensure adequate time for thorough evaluations and meaningful patient interactions without the productivity pressures common in high-volume practices.
The patient population reflects the epidemiology of Eastern Kentucky, with lung cancer and colorectal cancer representing the most common malignancies you'll treat. This case mix provides excellent exposure to evidence-based treatment protocols while allowing you to develop particular expertise in the cancers most affecting your community. Unlike many rural practices where physicians feel isolated in clinical decision-making, you'll have robust support through weekly system-wide tumor boards that include oncology, radiology, surgery, and other specialists across the ARH network.
Your clinical workflow will be supported by the Meditech EMR system used across all ARH facilities, providing seamless continuity when covering multiple locations. While Meditech may differ from Epic or Cerner systems you might have used elsewhere, the consistency across the entire health system eliminates the complexity of managing multiple platforms and ensures comprehensive patient records regardless of where care is provided.
Through ARH's affiliate status with UK Markey Cancer Center, you'll have access to a dedicated nurse liaison specifically assigned to ARH for streamlined referrals and patient navigation. The Hazard location offers clinical trial opportunities through membership in the UK McCarran Marquis Cancer Center Research Network, with a dedicated research nurse and the potential to serve as primary investigator on studies. This academic connection provides both professional development opportunities and expanded treatment options for your patients who might benefit from investigational therapies.
This clinical environment offers the best of both worlds: the satisfaction of community-based practice where you build lasting relationships with patients and families, combined with the academic resources and peer consultation typically found only in major medical centers. Your expertise will be truly valued as you help establish and grow oncology services that bring life-saving care closer to home for patients who have historically faced significant travel burdens to access specialized treatment.
