Clinical Component

Navigating the Clinical Component

At Coal County General Hospital, the Family Medicine physician will be immersed in a dynamic clinical environment designed to cater to a broad spectrum of healthcare needs in the community. The clinical responsibilities are divided across outpatient clinics, inpatient hospital care, and emergency room services, providing a comprehensive practice experience.

Outpatient Clinic Responsibilities:

The physician will be involved in outpatient care across three clinics located in Coalgate, Atoka, and Holdenville. These clinics are pivotal in providing routine and preventive healthcare services to the community. Responsibilities in the outpatient setting include:

  • Patient Consultations: Providing primary care services such as health assessments, managing chronic diseases, preventive care, and treatment of acute illnesses.
  • Supervision of APPs: Offering guidance and support to the Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in each clinic, ensuring high standards of patient care.
  • Walk-In Services: The Coalgate clinic operates on a walk-in basis, necessitating the ability to manage a variety of patient needs as they arise. This involves addressing both scheduled and unscheduled patient visits, promoting accessible healthcare for the community.
  • Scheduled Visits: At the Atoka and Holdenville clinics, the physician will conduct scheduled patient visits, focusing on both ongoing and preventive care.

Inpatient Hospital Responsibilities:

The inpatient care component at Coal County General Hospital involves:

  • Daily Rounds: Conducting patient rounds once a day from Monday to Friday. This includes monitoring patient progress, managing treatment plans, and coordinating with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Emergency Care: Providing consultative support in the hospital’s 2-bed Level 4 ER as needed. The ER handles a range of acute conditions, including strokes and cardiac emergencies, requiring the physician to be adept at managing urgent and critical care situations.
  • Long-Term Care: The physician will also be responsible for the healthcare needs of patients in two long-term care facilities operated by the hospital, located in Coalgate. These facilities provide extended care for elderly and chronically ill patients, requiring periodic medical oversight and intervention.

Call Schedule and Coverage:

Call duties are shared on a 1:2 schedule, ensuring continuous medical coverage. While APPs provide overnight coverage for the hospital and ER, the Family Medicine physician may need to assist via telephone consultations. This setup supports a balanced workload and enables prompt response to critical patient needs.

Patient Demographics and Services:

The physician will serve a diverse patient population that spans all age groups, reflecting the community’s broad healthcare needs. With a payor mix heavily skewed towards Medicaid and Medicare, the role is crucial in delivering accessible and high-quality care to underserved populations. Clinical services include routine family medicine, emergency stabilization, and procedures such as suturing. The hospital’s sophisticated imaging and laboratory services further support comprehensive patient care.

Collaborative Practice Environment:

Coal County General Hospital fosters a collaborative and supportive environment where the Family Medicine physician will work closely with a team of experienced APPs and other healthcare professionals. This teamwork approach ensures that patient care is seamless and effective across all settings.

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) System:

Coal County General Hospital utilizes the Thrive EMR system by TruBridge, formerly known as CPSI. This integrated system supports seamless coordination across the hospital’s services, including outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and the emergency room. Thrive enables efficient documentation, patient tracking, and care management, ensuring that all patient information is readily accessible and well-organized. Additionally, for post-acute and nursing home care, the hospital uses PointClickCare, a specialized EHR that caters to the needs of long-term care facilities. These robust systems enhance the hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality, coordinated care and support the diverse clinical responsibilities of the Family Medicine physician.

In this role, the physician will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of the Coalgate community, providing a diverse and rewarding clinical practice experience.
