As a 1099 independent contractor, you’ll enjoy autonomy and the ability to maximize your income without the administrative weight of hospital employment. Whether you’re a clinical generalist or a seasoned academic leader, the financial structure supports both personal stability and long-term career satisfaction.

General Anesthesiologist Compensation

  • $280–290/hour base rate as a 1099 independent contractor
  • 54-hour workweek: three 10-hour shifts plus one 24-hour weekday call
  • Post-call day off built into weekly schedule
  • Additional weekend call incentives:
  •     • $750 per call for Friday and Sunday
  •     • $1,000 per call for Saturday 24-hour coverage
  • Total annual earnings estimated at $695,520+
  • $50,000 signing bonus provided by the hospital
  • $100,000 student loan repayment over 4 years (hospital-sponsored)
  • Up to $15,000 relocation allowance (hospital-sponsored)

Program Director Compensation

  • $280/hour for clinical hours (typically 2–3 days/week in OR)
  • $210/hour for GME/administrative hours (approximately 80 hours/month)
  • Estimated total annual earnings of $655,200+
  • No weekend call required, maintaining your work-life balance
  • $50,000 signing bonus provided by the hospital
  • $100,000 student loan repayment over 4 years (hospital-sponsored)
  • Up to $15,000 relocation allowance (hospital-sponsored)

Additional Professional Benefits and Considerations

  • Malpractice Insurance: Physicians must carry their own coverage; most pay $8,000–$12,000 annually depending on specialty
  • Tail Coverage: Also the physician’s responsibility, consistent with standard 1099 roles
  • Paid Time Off: All physicians receive 6 weeks of paid time off annually
  • Health Insurance: Not included; physicians may obtain coverage independently or through professional associations
  • Retirement Planning: No employer-sponsored retirement plan, but flexibility to set up SEP IRA or solo 401(k) with personal advisors
  • Licensure, CME, Professional Fees: Physician-funded; the group may recommend vendors or platforms
