Leadership Opportunity: Hospice and Palliative Care Medical Director at MedStar Health

As the Palliative Care provider, you will provide quality clinical and professional services to patients within the scope of your qualifications. You will direct general patient care provided at the hospital using accepted procedures and commonly used therapies and providing appropriate support services. You are solely responsible for the quality of medical care provided.

As the Palliative Care Medical Director reporting to the Physician Executive Director of Palliative Care Medicine for MedStar Health, you are the leader of the service line at the hospital and are accountable for all professional administrative and clinical duties related to Palliative Care service at the hospital. You will be involved in the development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of care, treatment, and services.

As Medical Director for Hospice, you would be responsible for providing services at a minimum of 6 hours per week. The staff consists of one other Hospice provider and a Nurse Practitioner that also is providing service. There is a separate 12-bed Hospice facility, not attached to the hospital. The other provider is a PRN who used to be the Medical Director for a long time and semi-retired. The Nurse Practitioner covers 12-weeks of call the other provider covers 16-20 weeks. Call is basically 1:3 and it is all phone call or computer. Symptom management during the day is split with the Nurse Practitioner. 

Some of the Hospice Medical Director responsibilities: 

  • Provide oversight of the medical services of the Hospice program and ensure accurate billing.
  • Provide coverage and support to the Hospice staff for a minimum of 6 hours per week. 
  • Provide oversight of Hospice Physicians and Nurse Practitioners.
  • Certify that patients meet medical criteria for Hospice admission and level of care.
  • Serve as the leader of the Hospice Interdisciplinary team as needed.
  • Participate in medical on-call rotation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of state and federal regulations and standards particular to the Medicare Hospice benefit.
  • Complete or delegate face-to-face assessments and visits to Hospice patients.
  • Complete initial certification of terminal illness documentation in timely and accurate manner.
  • Complete electronic death certificate documentation in timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide consultation, as needed, with community physicians regarding end-of-life care.
