At MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital we see anywhere from 80-100 deliveries per month. We currently have 5 full-time OBGYN’s and one provider who does GYN only. Due to community need, we will be adding an additional OBGYN to the practice. There are no family physicians doing obstetrics at our hospital. We also have 6 Midwives (and will add a 7th later) and 5 Nurse Practitioners in the practice as well.
The Nurse Practitioners help in the clinic only with OB and GYN patients, and we assign them to a lot of the lower risk cases. We are about 50% OB and 50% GYN in our practice and about 30% of the OB patients are high-risk. The C-section rate is about 12%
We have a Level 1 nursery and do not see anything under the 35-week gestation period. Anything less than 35 weeks is shipped to one of our MedStar hospitals closer to DC. We also have a maternal fetal medicine practice in Brandywine, that is available for consultations, about 35 miles north of our hospital.
We have 2 RN’s that triage and we are currently looking for a 3rd. Our Midwives are staffed 24/7 in the hospital. They make low risk vaginal deliveries as well.
Call:
We take 6-days of call per month which includes one 3-day weekend. It’s 24-hour call covering one hospital. Your responsibilities include taking care of all deliveries and emergent procedures, with the following day off. Any additional call days will be compensated additionally, and that rate will be negotiated in your contract. There are no Laborists. The hospital is covered by the on-call OBGYN with assistance from a CNM most shifts.
