Sault Ste. Marie

While Sault Ste Marie is a smaller sized town in rural Michigan with a population of nearly 15,000 residents the population of the greater Sault Ste Marie area is nearly 100,000 in population. The large increaser in population numbers is due to the Canadian Sault Ste Marie residents that live just 5-10 minutes away across the border.

History

  • The only city in all of Chippewa County
  • Second most populated city in the upper peninsula
  • Separated from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada by the St. Mary’s River
  • Connected by the Sault Ste Marie International Bridge 
  • Fourth oldest city west of the Appalachians in the United States

  • Named for the French term for the nearby rapids, Les Saults de Sainte Marie
