Navigating the Clinical Component

Patient Population: The patient demographic includes individuals with various neurological conditions, such as neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, headaches, and general neurological needs.

Patient Volume: The incoming provider can expect to see 8 patient contact hours per day, with a mix of new and follow-up patients. Specifically:
6 new patients and 9 follow-up patients per day is typical
The provider may be able to see more patients if needed, but the expectation is 8 patient hours per day
The practice allots 60 minutes for new patients consults, and 30 minutes for follow-ups.

Services Provided: Key services include EMG, autonomic testing, Botox injections for headaches, and small fiber neuropathy workups. There is a significant need for epilepsy services, and the new hire will have the opportunity to develop a specialized epilepsy program working with St. Josephs. The practice does not treat stroke patients as there is no hospital setting for them. There is a small 6-bed research hospital that the practice covers during the day, providing approximately 1-2 consults per year.

The practice does not read EEG but there is the ability to, if desired, through Kaiser at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

There is no EP

PUDs do sleep, however, there is plenty of opportunity to build a sleep practice.

Call Schedule: There is no on-call requirement as there is no hospital service. The clinic operates as an outpatient facility, and any emergencies are managed by a dedicated nurse triage system.

Opportunities for Specialization: There are significant opportunities for the incoming neurologist to focus on and develop sub-specialties, especially in epilepsy and headache management.

Clinical Support Services: The clinic is supported by a team of nurses, medical assistants, and other clinical staff to ensure smooth operations and patient care.

Research Opportunities: While the emphasis is on patient care, there are opportunities for clinical research, particularly for those interested in autonomic testing and neuromuscular disorders.

Use of Midlevel Providers: The team includes two APPs who assist with patient follow-ups and are gradually being trained to handle new patient consults. They currently see approximately 6-8 patients per day.
