Navigating the Clinical Component

HMC radiology runs as a general community practice with a broad case mix. On any given day, you could be reading spine MRI, working up a diagnostic mammogram, or performing an ultrasound-guided biopsy. The department reads about 300 studies per day across all modalities.

Practice Snapshot

Detail Information
Annual Imaging Volume About 109,000 studies (most recent fiscal year)
Daily Department Volume About 300 studies
Case Mix Roughly equal parts breast, body, MSK, and neuro
Sites Hillsboro Medical Center and the Seventh Avenue outpatient imaging building
EMR Epic
PACS Visage
Procedure Support One physician assistant
Interventional Radiology Separate IR service onsite five days a week
Technologists About 100 across all modalities

Patient Population

HMC serves suburban Washington County along with rural and coastal communities stretching to Salem, the north coast, and Columbia County. Patients from smaller coastal hospitals often come to HMC for imaging those facilities don't offer. The group describes its patient base as loyal; patients who start care at HMC tend to stay.

Payer Share of Patients
Medicare and Medicaid About 70%
Commercial About 25%
Other About 5%

Case Mix and Reading

The group's work splits roughly evenly across breast imaging, body imaging, MSK, and neuro. A few areas stand out:

Neuroimaging: A strong neurosurgery presence at HMC drives a high volume of spine MRI.

Breast imaging: Screening, diagnostic workup, and biopsy all run through HMC's dedicated breast center.

MSK ultrasound: Referrals from local orthopedic surgeons have grown steadily over the past few years.

Subspecialty reads: More specialized studies go to subspecialty-trained members of the group.

If you bring fellowship training or a skill the group doesn't yet offer, the group will help you build volume in that area. MSK ultrasound grew this way after one radiologist introduced the service at the monthly orthopedic meeting.

Procedures

You'll perform light general radiology procedures. Most are scheduled during the day rather than handled as emergencies.

  • Paracentesis and thoracentesis
  • Thyroid biopsies
  • Straightforward lung and liver biopsies
  • CT- and ultrasound-guided drainages and biopsies
  • Arthrograms and joint injections
  • Breast biopsies, including upright stereotactic procedures

The separate IR service handles runoffs, complex biopsies, and other specialized interventional work. Most procedures take place in the Seventh Avenue building, where the exam rooms are larger. Radiologists go to the hospital for procedures when inpatient needs or patient factors call for it.

Physician Assistant Support

A physician assistant performs most procedures, except mammography-guided and CT-guided procedures, under the supervision of the radiologist covering that day. This includes fluoroscopy-based GI studies and joint injections. Having a PA on procedures keeps more of your time at the workstation, and the PA also serves as a liaison between the technologists and the radiology group.

Equipment

Modality Equipment
CT Philips 128-slice
MRI Philips Achieva 1.5T; second 1.5T unit scheduled for replacement with a Siemens MAGNETOM Flow 1.5T with AI software
PET/CT Mobile Siemens PET/CT service
Mammography Two Hologic 3D tomosynthesis units
Breast Biopsy Upright stereotactic biopsy with specimen imaging
Nuclear Medicine SPECT/CT
Ultrasound Dedicated ultrasound rooms in the outpatient imaging area
Fluoroscopy Dedicated room for joint injections and GI studies
Other Digital X-ray and DEXA

HMC also runs a mobile mammography program that serves patients across seven counties.

Breast Center

HMC's breast center opened in 2011 and was designed using Lean principles to keep patients, technologists, and radiologists moving efficiently. Screening and DEXA sit at the front of the center. Diagnostic mammography and ultrasound are located toward the back, directly across from the radiologist reading room.

Technologist Team

HMC employs about 100 technologists across all imaging areas. Experience ranges from technologists with 30 years at HMC to recent graduates, and HMC also trains imaging students.

Call

Call Detail Structure
Frequency About 7 weekends per year at 1.0 FTE, prorated by FTE
Hours 8 am to 6 pm Saturday and Sunday
Location From home, using your OHSU-provided workstation
Focus ED and inpatient studies
Overnight Teleradiology service, 6 pm to 8 am

Coming into the hospital during call is rare. Procedures are not performed during weekend call. Starting December 2026, the overnight teleradiology service moves to final reads, so your weekday mornings begin without an overnight overread queue.

Teaching and Research

This is a clinical position with no teaching or research requirements. Radiology residents do not rotate at HMC. Physician assistant students from Pacific University and imaging students do complete rotations in the department.
