Outdoor Activities & Entertainment

Entertainment: Discovering Entertainment in Our Community

Perham punches well above its size when it comes to entertainment. The downtown is active, the dining scene is varied for a town of 3,500, and the community's event calendar brings residents together throughout the year. In summer, the area's population roughly triples as lake home and cabin owners fill the region, which means local businesses and venues are well-supported and lively from June through August. Detroit Lakes, about 20 miles northwest, adds additional dining, shopping, and event options within an easy drive.

In 2018, Smithsonian Magazine selected Perham as one of the nation's Best Small Towns to Visit, citing its active downtown and community character.

Dining and Nightlife

Perham's restaurant scene runs from casual lakeside dining to full-service event venues. Several local spots have built a regional following.

  • The Cactus — Full-service restaurant and bar with steak, seafood, pasta, and burgers; 8-lane bowling alley, arcade, and an event center seating up to 450. A local anchor for group dining and family entertainment.

Festivals and Events

Perham's event calendar is one of its strongest community assets. Events draw visitors from across the region and give residents consistent reasons to gather.

  • Turtle Fest — The signature annual event, now in its 40th year. Held over five days in June, it includes the International Turtle Races, a grand parade, street fair, live music, fireworks, a 5K/10K, a car show, a street dance, a demo derby, and a medallion hunt with cash prizes.
  • International Turtle Races — Held every Wednesday in June, July, and August at City Hall Park. Open to all ages; participants can bring their own turtle or use a provided one.
  • East Otter Tail County Fair — A 100-plus year tradition held in July with a carnival, concerts, livestock competitions, a petting zoo, and live entertainment.
  • Parade of Lights — An annual holiday season tradition bringing the community together in winter.
  • Rib Cook-Off — An annual community barbecue competition run by the Perham Area Chamber of Commerce.
  • Farmers Market — Weekly summer market in downtown Perham.

Shopping and Downtown

Downtown Perham has a walkable mix of locally owned boutiques, specialty gift shops, and antique stores. The active Main Street reflects a community that has invested in keeping its commercial core relevant. The Chamber of Commerce regularly organizes Shop Perham promotions tied to community events, which drive consistent foot traffic to local businesses.

Broader Regional Access

Detroit Lakes, 20 miles northwest, offers expanded retail, additional dining options, a cinema, and a more developed entertainment corridor along Highway 10. The Twin Cities are about 3.5 hours away for major concerts, professional sports, museums, and broader cultural programming.

Outdoor Activities: Embrace the Outdoors: Activities in Our Area

Outdoor recreation is not an add-on in Perham. It is the defining feature of daily life in the region. Otter Tail County contains 1,048 lakes, more than any other county in the United States, and several of them are within minutes of downtown Perham. The combination of water access, trail infrastructure, hunting land, and winter recreation options means that residents who enjoy the outdoors can find something to do in every season without leaving the county.

Water Recreation

Big Pine Lake and Little Pine Lake are the two primary lakes within immediate reach of the city. Both offer public access points, swimming beaches, boat launches, and docking areas. The area's lakes are known for strong populations of walleye, northern pike, bass, crappie, and panfish, making fishing a year-round activity. Ice fishing draws anglers to the lakes each winter once conditions allow.

  • Fishing — Walleye, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and panfish throughout the county's lakes
  • Boating and Pontoon Rentals — Available through local resorts and outfitters; over 26 resorts and campgrounds operate in the Perham area
  • Kayaking and Paddleboarding — Chase Crew SUP and Kayak operates rental locations in Perham and nearby Ottertail
  • Swimming — Public beach at Paul Miller Park on Little Pine Lake, with a dock, boat ramp, and covered shelter
  • Ice Fishing — Available throughout winter on area lakes

Trails and Cycling

  • Heart of the Lakes Trail — A 32-mile, 10-foot-wide multi-use trail connecting Perham and Pelican Rapids through Maplewood State Park. Open to walkers, joggers, cyclists, inline skaters, and dog walkers. Snowmobiling is permitted on certain segments in winter. Equipped trailheads include water fountains, bike repair stations, and phone charging.
  • Otter Trail Scenic Byway — A 150-mile loop through Otter Tail County linking Perham, Fergus Falls, Battle Lake, and Pelican Rapids. Suitable for scenic drives, cycling, and photography.
  • Arvig Park Bike and Walking Path — Paved trail circling the Lakeside Golf Course and connecting to city parks.

Winter Recreation

Winter is an active season in Perham, not a dormant one. The area's lakes freeze reliably each year, and the county's trail network transitions to winter use.

  • Snowmobiling — Over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails accessible from within the city
  • Ice Fishing — A major regional activity from December through February or March
  • Ice Skating — City-maintained outdoor rink south of the Perham Area Community Center, with a staffed warming house
  • Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing — Available at Maplewood State Park, approximately 30 miles from Perham

Hunting

The region's mix of wetlands, prairie, and forest supports diverse hunting opportunities. Whitetail deer are plentiful throughout Otter Tail County, and the area's lakes and marshes attract ducks and geese during migration seasons. Ruffed grouse and other small game are also present. For shooting sports, the Perham area is home to one of the top trapshooting ranges in Minnesota.

Golf

  • Perham Lakeside Golf Course — A 27-hole championship course on the shore of Little Pine Lake, consistently ranked among the better public courses in west-central Minnesota. Open to the public, with a lakeside restaurant and bar on site.
