A Legacy of Care: History of Hospitals in Bandon, Oregon


Dr. Roland V. (R.V.) Leep, M.D. (1887 – 1929)
Born in Myrtle Point, OR, Dr. Leep began his medical practice in Bandon in 1912. He quickly established an Emergency Hospital and became a central figure in local healthcare until his untimely death in 1929.

R.L. Leep Memorial Hospital (1937 – 1955)
This hospital, located on First Street in Old Town Bandon, originally served survivors of the 1936 Bandon fire and continued to provide essential medical care until it closed in 1955.

Southern Coos General Hospital (1960 – 1999)
Organized in 1955 and opened in 1960, Southern Coos General Hospital served the community until it closed in December 1999, making way for the current Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center.

Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center
Opened in December 1999, our 21-bed hospital continues to serve Southern Coos County and Northern Curry County, a primary service area home to about 10,000 residents. Our facility was granted Critical Access Hospital designation in November 2000, and we opened a Multi-Specialty Clinic in March 2015.
