Understanding the Role

St. Joseph's Medical Center is recruiting a Board-Certified Cardiothoracic Surgeon to join the Morrissey Family Heart & Vascular Institute in Stockton, California. This is an employed position through Foundation Physicians Medical Group, a Dignity Health / CommonSpirit Health medical group entity. The incoming surgeon joins an established, high-volume program with a national reputation for clinical outcomes, stepping into an existing patient base and a strong referral network on day one.

The Opportunity

The Morrissey Family Heart & Vascular Institute is one of the busiest and most recognized cardiothoracic surgery programs in California, serving a regional catchment of approximately one million patients across San Joaquin County and surrounding communities. The program performs approximately 300 cardiac surgeries and 300 thoracic cases annually and is supported by a referral network of roughly 40 cardiologists.

The incoming surgeon will join two experienced colleagues, one of whom has led the program for decades. The primary focus is cardiac surgery, with access to thoracic and vascular cases available based on the candidate's training and interests.

Service Area and Community Need

Stockton is the county seat of San Joaquin County and the largest city in California's Central Valley. St. Joseph's Medical Center is the largest hospital and largest private employer in Stockton. The hospital serves a diverse, medically underserved regional population with high rates of cardiovascular disease, supporting consistent and growing surgical demand. The program has seen a notable increase in clinical activity over the past year, and the hospital is in the planning stages of a significant expansion that will add a new patient tower, new ICU capacity, and new operating rooms, expected to operationalize around 2030.

Qualifications

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Eligible for medical staff privileges at St. Joseph's Medical Center
  • Experience with advanced cardiac procedures including CABG and valve surgery
  • TAVR experience or interest preferred; program is an active TAVR center
  • Commitment to collegial, team-based practice
