The cardiothoracic surgery program at St. Joseph's Medical Center is built around two experienced surgeons with deep roots in the Stockton community. The team operates with strong institutional support, a tenured perioperative staff, and a collaborative culture that extends across surgical services. Staff longevity in the OR and surgical services departments is notable, with several team members logging 10 or more years at the facility.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Team

James D. Morrissey, MD Dr. Morrissey is the founding surgeon of the Morrissey Family Heart & Vascular Institute and has practiced at St. Joseph's Medical Center for decades. He trained at State University of New York Upstate Medical University and completed his residency at Barnes Jewish Hospital, one of the country's premier cardiac surgery training programs. He operates through Stockton Cardiothoracic Surgical Medical Group, a private practice affiliated with the hospital. Dr. Morrissey holds hospital privileges at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Dameron Hospital, and Mark Twain Medical Center. He carries a 4.8-star patient rating across more than 25 verified reviews and is actively welcoming of an incoming surgeon to strengthen and carry the program forward.

M. Mahbub Jamil, MD Dr. Jamil is employed through Dignity Health Medical Group and practices at the DHMF multi-specialty clinic on the St. Joseph's campus. He is a member of the TAVR team at the Morrissey Family Heart & Vascular Institute alongside Dr. Morrissey. Board certified in Critical Care Surgery and General Surgery, Dr. Jamil brings additional subspecialty depth to the program and is fluent in English, Bengali, and Hindi. He holds a 5.0-star patient rating.
