Call Responsibilities: The call rotation is 1:4 with an additional provider, and the after-hours call volume is light, typically involving 2-5 phone calls per week. The physician will not typically need to go into the hospital, as there is an answering service that takes all the first calls.
Rounding: Rounding responsibilities are consult-only, and the oncologists usually have 4-6 patients in the hospital to round on at any given time. The physician on call will perform in-house rounding and can seek assistance from the Nurse Practitioner (NP) if the patient census is high.
Scope of Practice: The physician will primarily focus on Oncology (65%) and Hematology (35%). Experience with Bone Marrow Extractions would be a plus, although the majority of these procedures are performed by the NP. On average, the oncologists see 12-14 patients per day, and the cancer center averages 40 new patients per month.
