Position Overview

Understanding the Role

Full-time faculty anesthesiologist at University of Toledo Medical Center, Northwest Ohio's only academic anesthesia program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical anesthesia care at Level II Trauma Center with cardiac capabilities
  • Supervise residents in 2:1 ratio (allows genuine teaching relationships)
  • Participate in in-house call rotation (currently 7-8 calls/month, decreasing with new hires)
  • Teach integrated into daily clinical work, not separate classroom time

Why This Position Exists

The department is rebuilding after recent attrition and preparing for anticipated retirements:

  • Replace faculty who left due to various career changes
  • Prepare for 2-3 upcoming retirements
  • Reduce unsustainable call burden on current physicians
  • Support surgical growth exceeding current anesthesia capacity

Your arrival directly reduces colleague call burden and stabilizes the department.

Service Area & Community Need

  • Only anesthesia residency program in Northwest Ohio
  • Serves Toledo and surrounding communities (Perrysburg, Sylvania, rural areas)
  • Patients choose academic medical center for specialized expertise
  • Fills genuine regional healthcare need (not just redistributing existing capacity)

Required Qualifications

  • Board-certified anesthesiologist (active, unrestricted license)
  • Academic/teaching experience preferred (new graduates without academic exposure may find limited fit)
  • Cardiac anesthesia capability preferred but not mandatory
  • Must reside within community for in-house call coverage
  • Commitment to resident education integrated into clinical practice

Reporting Structure

  • Report to: Dr. Kimberly D. Jenkins, Department Chair
  • Medical Director: Dr. Andrew Casa Bianca (transitioning)
  • Associate Program Director has protected time for residency education
  • Servant leadership philosophy (supportive rather than hierarchical)

Work Schedule

Full-time clinical position:

  • 12 OR rooms (expanding to 14 with successful recruitment)
  • Standard anesthesia work week
  • In-house call: 7-8 calls/month currently (target reduction as faculty join)
  • No administrative burden beyond standard academic practice
  • Academic salary structure (stable compensation, not productivity-based)

Position Type

  • Replacement/expansion position (not temporary or contract)
  • Part of deliberate faculty rebuilding effort
  • Long-term academic career opportunity
  • Many current faculty have 10-30+ years tenure here

What Makes This Different

vs. Private Practice:

  • Stable academic environment (no ownership changes or contract terminations)
  • Teaching integrated into work (not burden added on top)
  • Dual employer-funded pensions (no employee contributions required)
  • Predictable schedule and compensation

vs. Other Academic Centers:

  • Only anesthesia residency in region (your teaching matters more)
  • 2:1 resident supervision (better than stretched 3:1 or 4:1 ratios)
  • Manageable call with backup systems
  • Government-state ownership provides institutional stability

Key Advantages

  • Join rebuilding effort where your arrival creates immediate positive impact
  • Reduce call burden for colleagues carrying excessive coverage
  • Practice where physician density is lower (your expertise fills genuine need)
  • Build academic career with retirement security private practice cannot match
