Position Overview

Understanding the Role

OBGYN | Willis-Knighton Health System | Shreveport, Louisiana

Willis-Knighton Health System is building a new OB clinic on its South Campus to serve an underserved Medicaid population that currently has limited access to prenatal and obstetric care. This is a new position, not a replacement. The incoming physician will establish the clinic from the ground up alongside a growing team of mid-level providers, with the full infrastructure of one of Louisiana's largest health systems behind them.

Why This Position Exists

The Shreveport-Bossier area has a significant gap in OB care for Medicaid patients. Without a dedicated clinic and willing providers at WK South, this population has been routed to the state hospital system. Willis-Knighton has identified a strong need for a physician-led clinic that can absorb these patients, grow deliveries on campus, and support the NICU and pediatric service lines. The system currently performs approximately 4,000 deliveries per year and is working to grow that volume.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and build a new OB practice on South Campus
  • Manage prenatal and obstetric care for a predominantly Medicaid population
  • Perform deliveries, including C-sections, at WK South Campus Labor and Delivery
  • Work alongside mid-level providers who will handle follow-up visits and routine care
  • Mentor future physicians and residents as the practice grows
  • Collaborate with the NICU, MFM, and OBHG teams on high-risk patients

Call Structure

Willis-Knighton has had an OB hospitalist group (OBHG) on campus for approximately 18 months. OBHG is on-site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and covers all unassigned patients and OB-ED triage.

For assigned patients, when a patient goes into active labor, OBHG contacts the primary OB, who can choose to come in or hand off the delivery. Approximately 60 percent of current WK OBs utilize OBHG for nighttime deliveries. Inductions are scheduled during daytime hours. The practical result is that true middle-of-the-night call deliveries are infrequent, estimated at roughly one or fewer per week. Full details of how call will be structured for the new clinic are being finalized with administrative leadership.

  • Works well with nurses and support staff
  • Communicates effectively with a diverse patient population
