A Practice Built Around the Full Spectrum of Care

Most inpatient psychiatry roles lock you into a single lane: admit, stabilize, discharge, repeat. At Wyoming Behavioral Institute, your clinical practice spans acute inpatient, residential, and outpatient care. You follow your patients through the full continuum, from the moment they arrive in crisis to the point they are stable enough to return to their communities. That continuity is rare in inpatient psychiatry, and it is one of the things that keeps physicians here long-term.

Your days will be structured but not rigid. On a typical day you will see approximately 15 patients, a mix of follow-up visits and fresh evaluations, across the acute and residential units. Several days per week you will also carry an outpatient caseload, seeing patients who have stepped down from inpatient care or who are being managed in the community. This is not a heavy outpatient burden; it is a few hours on select days, enough to maintain those therapeutic relationships without overwhelming your schedule. The variety keeps the work meaningful.

Patient Population

The children and adolescents who come to WBI are among the most complex psychiatric patients in the region. Because WBI is the only freestanding child and adolescent psychiatric facility in Wyoming, it absorbs cases that smaller community units cannot manage. These are not straightforward presentations. The patient population skews toward high acuity, with many arriving after exhausting other options closer to home.

Levels of Care and Clinical Scope

The breadth of WBI's programming sets this role apart from a standard inpatient attending position. You are not limited to one unit or one acuity level. Your caseload will draw from all three levels of care, giving you a practice that stays clinically interesting and professionally sustainable.

Call Structure

Call at WBI is manageable, and leadership takes physician quality of life seriously when structuring coverage. Weekend call is rare under normal circumstances, covered primarily by dedicated moonlighting physicians and part-time providers. Your primary call obligation is overnight, approximately one night per week on a rotating basis.

Clinical Support

You will not be managing this patient population alone. WBI has built a support structure that allows physicians to focus on psychiatric care rather than administrative and medical tasks.
