Empowering Minds: Education and Schools in Our Community

Education

Casper's educational landscape offers solid public schools, meaningful private options, and a community college that serves as both an academic and cultural anchor. The Natrona County School District (NCSD) is the primary public system, and it carries a reputation for academic programming — particularly at the high school level — that is stronger than many cities of comparable size. For physicians with families, education quality is often the pivotal relocation factor, and Casper offers enough to compete.

Public Schools: Natrona County School District (NCSD)

NCSD serves approximately 12,000 students across the city and county. The district operates two comprehensive high schools, several middle schools, and numerous elementary schools. It is among the better-funded districts in Wyoming, benefiting from severance tax revenue from the energy industry — a structural advantage many rural districts do not share.

High Schools

  • Natrona County High School (NCHS) — one of Wyoming's oldest and most storied high schools; large enrollment with a comprehensive curriculum, strong athletics, and a wide range of extracurricular offerings. AP courses include English, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, History, and more.
  • Kelly Walsh High School — Casper's second comprehensive high school with comparable academic offerings, competitive athletics, and strong fine arts programs. Many physician families on the east side fall within the Kelly Walsh attendance zone.

Both high schools maintain graduation rates above the state average and send a meaningful percentage of graduates to four-year universities, including the University of Wyoming, Colorado State University, and other regional institutions.

Middle Schools

  • Dean Morgan Middle School
  • Natrona County Middle School
  • Bar Nunn Middle School — serves the eastern suburbs

Elementary Schools

NCSD operates numerous elementary schools across Casper. The east side schools — including Mountain View Elementary, Cottonwood Elementary, and Willard Elementary — consistently draw the most interest from professional families based on school performance, parent engagement, and neighborhood demographics.

Specialized Programs

  • STEM Programs — NCSD has expanded STEM-focused curriculum at multiple schools, including robotics, engineering, and computer science
  • Advanced Placement (AP) — both high schools offer 15+ AP courses with pass rates above state averages
  • Gifted & Talented (GT) — district-wide GT program with pullout enrichment and accelerated curriculum beginning in elementary school
  • Dual Enrollment — students can earn Casper College credit during high school at reduced or no cost
  • Career & Technical Education (CTE) — strong programs in trades, healthcare, and business; the healthcare pathway is especially developed
  • Fine Artsband, choir, orchestra, and theater programs at all levels; Kelly Walsh performing arts programs have regional recognition
  • 1:1 Technology — the district has moved toward device access for all secondary students

Private Schools

Private school options in Casper are limited in number but meaningful in quality. For many physician families, the smaller class sizes and mission-driven environments are appealing alternatives to public schools.

  • Graduates commonly continue to NCHS or Kelly Walsh High School

Casper Christian Academy (K–12)

  • Small enrollment and personalized instruction
  • College preparatory focus
  • Tuition: approximately $5,000–$7,500/year

  • Many professional families use hybrid education models combining homeschool and private schooling

Online and Continuing Education

Casper College, the University of Wyoming, and other national online institutions provide degree programs and continuing education opportunities. These options allow spouses and family members to pursue additional education without needing to relocate.

Summary

Casper offers public schools that perform above average for Wyoming, supported by a state that invests meaningfully in K–12 education. The private school options are limited but strong, particularly for families seeking faith-based environments. Dual enrollment at Casper College provides a real academic and financial advantage, and the University of Wyoming offers a clear, affordable higher education pathway.

Families seeking elite private academies or nationally ranked school systems may find Casper's options smaller than those in major metro areas. But for families prioritizing quality education, safety, and a community where children are known by their teachers and coaches, Casper provides a school environment that is difficult to match in a city its size.
