Your clinical practice at Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma will span the full breadth of hematology and medical oncology. The case mix runs approximately 60% medical oncology and 40% hematology, giving you consistent exposure to both disciplines rather than narrowing into a subspecialty silo. You will see the diverse pathology typical of a high-volume community oncology program: breast, lung, colorectal, prostate, bladder, head and neck malignancies alongside lymphomas, myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, and benign hematologic conditions. The patient population is exclusively adult. Acute leukemias and bone marrow transplant cases are referred to tertiary academic centers, as are CAR-T and other highly specialized cellular therapies. This allows you to practice comprehensive oncology with appropriate scope while maintaining strong referral relationships when patients need resources beyond what community practice can offer.
Call responsibilities here bear little resemblance to the crushing schedules common at academic centers or large hospital-employed groups. The rotation runs approximately 1:5, and call is primarily phone-based. You will rarely need to return to the facility. There is no inpatient rounding requirement; hospitalists manage admissions, and oncology consults are limited and handled efficiently. No routine inpatient chemotherapy means your evenings and weekends remain largely protected. This structure was built intentionally by leadership who understood that sustainable careers in oncology require protected personal time.
Research participation at CCSWOK goes beyond token involvement. Every new patient is pre-screened for clinical trial eligibility before their first visit. A dedicated research team is embedded directly into clinical workflow, handling the administrative and regulatory burden so you can focus on patient care and clinical decision-making. The EMR generates real-time alerts when patients may qualify for available studies. Currently, 8% of patients are enrolled in clinical trials, a rate that exceeds many community programs and rivals some academic centers. Active trials span multiple disease states, with lung cancer representing the largest trial volume, followed by breast, colon, bladder, and head and neck malignancies.
Monthly tumor boards bring together medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgery, radiology, pathology, and the research team for comprehensive case review and treatment planning. This is not a perfunctory checkbox exercise; it represents genuine multidisciplinary collaboration where complex cases receive input from multiple specialists before treatment decisions are finalized. The research team participates actively, ensuring trial options are considered alongside standard approaches.

Interfaces with hospital systems pull labs, imaging, and pathology results seamlessly. Dedicated onboarding and EMR training help new physicians get up to speed quickly. The APP team of nurse practitioners and physician assistants is fully integrated into the hematology/oncology model. They conduct follow-up visits, manage routine patient issues, perform bone marrow biopsies, and handle inpatient consults when needed. They assist with treatment consents and patient education, partnering closely with physicians in both clinic and infusion workflows. This model extends your capacity without fragmenting patient care, allowing you to see more new patients and complex cases while maintaining continuity through your APP colleagues.
